Class AAAA No. 3 Gateway edges Blackhawk at buzzer

D.J. Boyce hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer to lift Gateway to a 48-45 victory against host Blackhawk in a non-section matchup.

The Gators (1-0), the third-ranked team in WPIAL Class AAAA, held the Cougars (0-1) to 11 first-half points, including just two in the first quarter, to build a 20-11 lead at the break.

But Blackhawk outscored Gateway, 22-14, in the third quarter to pull within one heading into the fourth.

Boyce led all scorers with 16 points, and Deon Baker added 12 for Gateway.

Alex Caratelli led Blackhawk with 11 points.

Other top boys games

• In a matchup of two teams ranked first in their respective classifications, Class AAAA New Castle (2-0) led by 19 points at halftime en route to an 80-59 victory against Class AA Beaver Falls in the New Castle tournament championship. The Hurricanes' Shawn Anderson led all scorers with 20 points. Elijah Cottrill scored 14 points for Beaver Falls (1-1).

• Dom Costello hit five 3-pointers and finished with 23 points to lead WPIAL Class AAA top-ranked Chartiers Valley (2-0) to a 77-58 win against Upper St. Clair (1-1) in the championship game of the Upper St. Clair tournament. Jordan Grabowski led the Panthers with 23 points.

• Wyatt Hagerty scored 19 points and grabbed 15 rebounds to lead WPIAL Class AAAA No. 5-ranked Bethel Park (2-0) to a 64-47 victory against the top-ranked team in the City League, Obama Academy (1-1), in the championship of the Bethel Park tournament. Obama's Deandre Byrd led all scorers with 25 points.

• Quaker Valley (2-0), the fourth-ranked team in WPIAL Class AA, outscored Burrell (1-1) by 18 points in the second half on its way to a 53-39 win in the Quaker Valley tournament. Qadir Taylor led the Quakers with 16 points.

• Lincoln Park (2-0), No. 1 in Class A, defeated Sto-Rox (1-1), No. 5 in Class AA, 65-48, in the championship of the Midland tournament. Maverick Rowan had 23 points for Lincoln Park. Rowan had 10 points in the fourth quarter. Antonio Kellem (12 points) of Lincoln Park was the MVP.

• Shelby Lindsay scored 26 points to lead WPIAL Class AAA No. 3-ranked South Park (2-0) to a 51-42 win against the WPIAL's top-ranked Class AAAA team, Bethel Park (1-1), in the Bethel Park tournament championship. The Eagles outscored the Black Hawks, 21-8, in the fourth quarter .

• Seton-LaSalle had five players in double figures, led by Natalie Piagessi's 16 points, in a 62-27 win against Oakland Catholic in the Oakland Catholic tournament. The defending PIAA Class AA champion Rebels (2-0) led, 28-9, at halftime after outscoring the Eagles (0-2), 17-2, in the second quarter.

• In a matchup of top five teams in WPIAL Class A, top-ranked Vincentian (2-0) beat No.4-ranked Serra Catholic (1-1), 67-59, in the Serra Catholic tournament championship. Vincentian's Breanna Wise scored 20 points, grabbed 15 rebounds and blocked 7 shots. Megan Sieg had a game-high 28 points for Serra.

• California's Courtnee McMasters had 39 points and 18 steals in the Trojans' 59-29 win against Trinity Christian.

• Jeannette's Ciara Gregory scored 39 points in a loss to Mount Pleasant and has 79 points in two games.
