Perry North Bakery open despite crash damage

Perry North Bakery open despite crash damage

Thanksgiving dessert, a highly coveted dish that concludes the feast, was threatened for hundreds of Pittsburghers Monday night when an SUV barrelled into Schorr Bakery in Perry North.

"It looks like it was hit by a bomb," said Nene Waldschmidt, manager of the store at 3912 Perrysville Ave. "It shattered and collapsed the whole front of the building."

The SUV came through the bakery's front wall, which is made up entirely of windows, and stopped. Perhaps through a stroke of holiday luck, initial assessments show no other major structural damage to the store, Ms. Waldschmidt said. A new door was installed Tuesday and the wall was boarded up.

The bakery closed to walk-ins Tuesday, but with the large room-sized oven and gas lines unaffected, employees managed to complete most of the scheduled orders. A few were sent to their sister store at 433 Perry Highway.

Ms. Waldschmidt said employees were expected to trickle in early Wednesday and begin preparing the last of the 100 orders scheduled for pick-up at the store later that day.

"All of our customers will be able to get their orders for Thanksgiving," she said.

The crash occurred around 10:30 p.m. Investigating officers could not be reached for additional comment.
