Several players with local connections have been selected today in the second day of the Major League Baseball amateur draft, which will conclude this evening.
The Seattle Mariners selected Duquesne University pitcher and Schenley High School product Keith Meyer, a righthanded pitcher, in the 15th round.
In the 17th round, the Chicago White Sox used their pick to select East Carolina University shortstop Dale Mollenhauer, a Pine-Richland High School product.
University of Pittsburgh righthanded pitcher Kyle Landis was the 18th round pick of the Cleveland Indians and Chad Rice, a Brownsville High School graduate and shortstop at Virginia Military Institute was selected in the 24th round by the Pirates. Penn State second baseman Matt Cavagnaro also went to the Pirates in the 21st round.
Seton Hill University right handed pitcher Rick Austin, a Pittsburgh nagtive, became that school's first baseball player to be drafted in the when he was selected by the Philadelphia Phillies in the 27th round.
In the 30th round, the Toronto Blue Jays chose David Kaye, a Riverview High School lefthanded pitcher and the WPIAL strikeout leader this season.
Dom Duggan, a centerfielder from Coastal Carolina via Seneca Valley went in round 32 to the San Francisco Giants.
Also of note was the Pirates' 20th round selection, Brian Tracy. The son of Pirates manager Jim Tracy, Brian is a righthanded pitcher from University of California -- Santa Barbara.
Another intriguing pick was turned in by the Los Angeles Angels in the 27th round. They selected West Virginia University football quarterback Pat White, who doesn't play college baseball. He was, however, a pitcher/outfielder on two state championship teams while in high school in Daphne, Ala. and was previously selected by the Angels in the fourth round out of high school.
The draft will continue into the evening.
