Regarding the April 4 letter “On Census, Why Is Race Relevant If Citizenship Isn’t?”: I believe the answer is simple. Rarely if ever has anyone been deported from this country because of race.
Having worked the 2010 census, we did due diligence in an attempt to get an accurate accounting of people living in this country. Census workers visited nursing homes, personal care homes, church parishes, residential homes, soup kitchens, soup lines and areas potentially in harm’s way such as riverbanks and under bridges to account for the homeless people who lived in those areas.
The 2010 census cost $13 billion of taxpayer money to perform. The census is mandated by our Constitution, so why politicize it by asking questions that would be a deterrent and not central in getting accurate information for people living in this country?
