Those who perpetrate acts of terror are not true Muslims

This Muslim American is sickened by the recent news of the worst terror attack in the history of modern Egypt. A militant Muslim group bombed and fired on hundreds of worshipers gathered at a Sufi mosque during Friday congregational prayers, killing more than 300 people (Nov. 25, “Militants Attack Egyptian Mosque”). Sufism is a mystical sect of Islam that seeks inner peace through ritualistic chanting and prayer.

The same Quran that we all adhere to as Muslims says that killing one innocent person is akin to killing all of mankind. This is irrespective of whether the victim is a Muslim or non-Muslim. The Prophet Muhammad warned that such evil perpetrators, as the ones who carried out this mosque massacre, would claim to represent him but would in actuality have no connection with Islam.

The government of Egypt must protect its people from violent extremism. Similarly, all of us as global citizens have an obligation to speak out against the despicable carnage.
