Researchers at the National Aviary have announced a $300,000-plus project to track golden eagle migration through Pennsylvania and other eastern states to determine where future wind power turbines should be built to minimize bird fatalities.
Two eagles have been outfitted with radio telemetry units that will allow the aviary to track their migration. They are now gliding over the hills of West Virginia and Kentucky. At least eight more birds will be added to the study group next spring. Data from all the eagles' migratory movements will be used along with topographic and weather data to produce models that will show migratory corridors and allow wind power development in the most appropriate areas.
The aviary this week announced that a live map that tracks the movement of the two transmitting golden eagles is available for public viewing at www.aviary.org/csrv/eaglePA.php.
