Aldi is planning a grocery store in South Fayette, just outside of the Bridgeville border.
The 15,946-square-foot discount market will be part of a new shopping center called The Crossings at South Fayette, the developer has announced.
The eight-acre site is at the intersection of Washington Pike and Route 50/Millers Run, near the Bridgeville interchange of Interstate 79.
Plans also include a 4,400-square-foot bank and/or restaurant, and a 16,500-square-foot commercial building with three to five businesses and a coffee drive-thru.
The developer, Bridgeville Realty Partners LLC of Franklin Park, has not announced tenants for those buildings.
Other grocery stories are located or will be built within a mile of the site: the planned 88-acre Newbury Market in South Fayette has secured Giant Eagle as a tenant about a half-mile away on Route 50; a Shop'n Save supermarket sits about a mile southwest on Washington Pike in South Fayette; and a Giant Eagle in Collier is about one mile northeast on Washington Pike.
Dale Greco of Bridgeville Realty Partners and engineer Tysen Miller of GAI Consultants Inc. of Cecil presented plans for The Crossings during the South Fayette commissioners' workshop meeting March 13. An Aldi representative also attended.
Commissioners are scheduled to vote Wednesday on the development plans and on applications for conditional use and land subdivision.
The plan involves demolishing the Bridgeville Fuel Stop gas station and developing the vacant land behind it, which Ionics Inc. formerly occupied. About 230 parking spaces are proposed.
Township engineer Mike Benton said the main entrance on Washington Pike will line up with the traffic light at the T-intersection with Route 50.
Two additional entrances will be on Daniell Drive, a road adjacent to Washington Pike that runs alongside a McDonald's restaurant and a GetGo convenience store.
Township approvals will be contingent upon the state Department of Transportation approving the traffic plan for the shopping center, Mr. Benton said.
PennDOT is reviewing the traffic studies of three planned developments in the Route 50/I-79 corridor to ensure the traffic plan "works as a whole rather than each one individually," Mr. Benton said.
The plans are The Crossings, Newbury Market and the former Star City Cinemas site, set to include a Washington Financial Bank, a Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC pediatric center and possibly a township civic center.
The Aldi website lists at least 20 stores in the Pittsburgh area, including locations in Robinson, McKees Rocks, Baden, Monaca, Baldwin Township, Bethel Park, West Mifflin and Washington.
The discount grocery chain operates more than 1,000 stores in 31 states, according to the website. Each market carries about 1,400 regularly stocked items -- including produce, meat and bread -- mostly with the Aldi brand name.
