Aldi is the first business to open its doors at The Crossings in South Fayette on Washington Pike near the Route 50/Interstate 79 interchange.
A Starbucks and a Chipolte Mexican Grill are scheduled to open by Memorial Day.
“They hope to be open sooner,” said Ryan Eggleston, South Fayette manager. The site will also contain a plaza for other retailers and restaurants.
Aldi hosted a grand opening Jan. 14 for its 16th location in Allegheny County. Hundreds of shoppers waited to enter as company leaders and local officials participated in a ribbon-cutting ceremony.
Development is ongoing in the township. A satellite location of Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC opened in October, and construction is ongoing at the Newbury residential and retail properties.
Officials issued a request for proposals in September for the location of the former Star City movie complex. Township administrators are reviewing options for the site.
A resident at the Jan. 14 workshop meeting said she was concerned over traffic issues with the ongoing development. On her way to Canonsburg from Bridgeville, she said, she was stuck in traffic due to people making left turns at The Crossings.
“Why on earth would you permit people to turn left there?” she asked.
Drivers are not permitted to make that left turn during peak hours. A second entrance is near the GetGo.
Mr. Eggleston said the situation is temporary. He said a multi-community traffic task force is mapping out solutions to the current challenges.
