Penn State's DeChellis gets three-year extension

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- Penn State basketball coach Ed DeChellis was rewarded with a three-year contract extension today that will keep him on the job through the 2013-14 season.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

DeChellis, a Monaca native, was named Big Ten Conference coach of the year last season after leading the Nittany Lions to a school-record 27 victories and the National Invitation Tournament title.

"We are proud of what we have accomplished thus far and are focused on more goals ahead," said DeChellis, who has an 84-103 record in six seasons at his alma mater. "I'm excited about the players and coaches we have and the facility improvements we have made over the last few years. We have a program that will continue to be nationally competitive and fun and exciting to watch."

The Nittany Lions (27-11) set a record with 17 home wins last season, yet were left out of the NCAA tournament. Home attendance has exceeded an average of 8,000 fans per game the past two seasons for the first time since 2002.

Penn State returns three starters and eight lettermen this season, including sophomore point guard Talor Battle, a first-team All-Big Ten pick.

"We are very excited about the significant progress our men's basketball program has made under coach DeChellis and are thrilled that he will continue to lead the program into the future," athletic director Tim Curley said.

"Ed and his staff have brought tremendous work ethic, passion and energy to the program and the Penn State basketball community. This past season was very special."
