Man killed by falling tree

A man was killed this morning when a tree he was cutting down fell on him in New Derry, Westmoreland County, the coroner's office said.

Brian M. Shean, 37, of New Derry, died in the accident, which happened about 9:30 a.m. in a wooded lot in the 200 block of Pittsburgh Street.

The coroner's office said Mr. Shean and his father were helping a friend cut down the tree when it fell and became lodged in another tree nearby. As the men tried to pull it down, the timber, which was about 50 feet tall and 12 inches in diameter, fell toward them, crushing Mr. Shean.
