Another in a series of rock blasts is scheduled for 9 a.m. Saturday as part of the hillside stabilization project along Route 28 south in Harmar -- weather permitting.
Traffic is to be stopped in both directions at 8:55 a.m. on Route 28 as well as on parallel Freeport Road in the vicinity. If all goes well, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation will start reopening the roads about an hour later, although it could be early afternoon before Route 28 is reopened in the southbound direction.
PennDOT's contractor is scheduled to blast a 500-foot-long section about half-way up the hillside, called the "intermediate shelf," being cleared to catch falling rock and debris in the future. Once completed, the blasting will move to a lower and last shelf that's part of the $8.5 million project covering about one-third of a mile of the slide-prone area.
