The Steelers received some positive injury news Tuesday when two players that were injured in their 38-31 victory at Green Bay were not ruled out for the regular-season finale against the Cleveland Browns.
Receiver Emmanuel Sanders left the game with a knee injury and did not return, but he was termed questionable for Sunday with a meniscus injury, according to head coach Mike Tomlin. The same was said of linebacker Terence Garvin, who also exited the game with an ankle injury.
If Sanders cannot play, rookie Markus Wheaton would have to take his place with a fractured finger. He sustained that injury Sunday, but likely would be available to play against the Browns. Tomlin also said linebacker Jason Worilds is dealing with an abdominal injury that he suffered in the Green Bay game.
The Steelers are still alive for a playoff berth entering the final week after three other teams in contention for the final playoff berth from the AFC obliged with losses Sunday. In addition to the Steelers needing to beat the Browns at Heinz Field, the Ravens must lose at Cincinnati, the Dolphins must lose at home to the Jets and the Chargers must lose to the Chiefs at home.
Tomlin spent a good portion of his news conference defending his decision to go for a touchdown late in the game rather than kneeling on the ball, bleeding the clock, and kicking a field goal.
The Steelers scored with 1:25 remaining, and the Packers returned the kickoff 70 yards to the Steelers’ 30-yard line. The Packers had the ball inside the Steelers 5-yard line with less than a minute to go and a chance to tie the score and send it to overtime.
Tomlin said he would do the same thing if faced with the decision again, citing the weather conditions and the blocked field goal the Steelers successfully performed against Green Bay’s Mason Crosby earlier in the half.
