An early morning crash left a Derry Township man dead and a Hempfield woman severely injured after they were thrown from a motorcycle.
Adam J. Smoker, 30, and a 29-year-old female passenger were riding east on Route 30 in Unity just after 2 a.m. today when they drove off the road onto a raised embankment, traveling about 50 yards before crashing, according to Pennsylvania State Police and the Westmoreland County Coroner's Office.
Mr. Smoker was flung into traffic and struck by two vehicles, while the passenger -- whose name was not released -- landed on the shoulder of the road and was transported to UPMC Presbyterian with severe injuries.
No other injuries were reported.
The pair weren't wearing helmets, according to state police. Mr. Smoker was pronounced dead at the scene at 3:20 a.m.
The Westmoreland County Coroner's office ruled the death as accidental.
