Channel surfing

Showtime has already renewed its new lesbian soap, "The L Word," after just two episodes. Production on the second season of 13 episodes will begin in June. ... Daily Variety reports that Steve Carrell ("The Daily Show") is in talks to star in NBC's Americanized version of Golden Globe-winning BBC series "The Office." ... As a tribute to the late Jack Paar, WQED will air "Jack Paar: Smart Television" tonight from 7:58 to 9, pre-empting "Ed Sullivan." ... University of Pittsburgh professor Franklin Toker will discuss his book "Fallingwater Rising," on C-SPAN2's "History on Book TV" airing at 11 tonight and 8 p.m. tomorrow.
