Previous broadcasting experience: WJET-TV, Erie, weekend weathercaster; WTAE-AM, weekend on-air staffer. Benson started as a part-time weatherman at WPXI and added weekend co-anchoring to his duties. A graduate of Gannon University, he became a Channel 11 full-timer in 1998.

Kevin Benson's WPXI biography notes that he "reported round-the-clock during the blizzard of '93 and kept Pittsburghers up to date as the biggest snowstorm in the last century moved through our area." He declined to answer questions for this report.
