TV Note: Emmys go to local media

Monday, September 16, 2002

By Rob Owen, Post-Gazette TV Editor

Out of 35 nominations, Pittsburgh media outlets took home six awards Saturday night at the Mid-Atlantic Emmy Awards ceremony in Philadelphia. WTAE and WQED won two awards each and KDKA and production company Mind Over Media won one each.

WTAE won for its special live news coverage of the crash of Flight 93 (news director Bob Longo, assistant news director Tallee Whitehorn, executive producer Jodi Gralnick, managing editor Rege Bobonis).

Channel 4 tied with WHTM-TV in the health and science program category for a "Healthy 4 Life" special, "Worth the Weight," edited by Michael Lazorko.

"Gridiron and Steel," produced and directed by Jeff Sewald, aired on WQED and won for one-time only sports special. Gina Catanzarite won an individual achievement award, writer/programming, for her work on WQED.

KDKA's Dave Crawley and photographer/editor Dave Forstate won for a news feature, "Poetic Injustice," in the same day, single report, news feature category.

Pittsburgh production company Mind Over Media won for "The Penn State Football Story" as outstanding sports series (producer/director Michael Messner, producer/director Michael "Frick" Weber, writer/narrator Guy Junker).

As stations, KDKA, WPXI and WPGH don't enter the regional Emmys, although individual employees sometimes do.

Back to the 'Beach'

FX's outrageous comedy series "Son of the Beach" begins a three-part season finale tomorrow night at 10.

This could be the end of original episodes for "Beach," which has aired for three seasons but doesn't fit FX's strategy of being the HBO of basic cable based on its success with "The Shield." The third and final episode in the "Beach" trilogy, airing Oct. 1, acknowledges Notch Johnson and his lifeguard crew may not return in a last scene that gives a definite sense of finality.

DIY in Pittsburgh

Do It Yourself network, a sister cable channel to Home & Garden Television that's available in Pittsburgh only on satellite, will premiere a half-hour weekly program on PCNC Sept. 21 at 9:30 a.m.

"Ask DIY," which will carry the title "DIY Pittsburgh" on PCNC, gives viewers the chance to have do-it-yourself project questions -- about home repair, gardening, decorating, car maintenance -- answered. The only localized element will be the show's title.

Gambling with Sopranos

The Mountaineer Race Track & Gaming Resort in Chester, W.Va., has arranged appearances by four cast members from HBO's "The Sopranos."

Jamie-Lynn Sigler (Meadow Soprano), Tony Sirico (Paulie Walnuts), Steve Schirripa (Bobby "Bacala" Baccalieri) and John Ventimiglia (Artie Bucco) will greet patrons and sign autographs from 6 to 10 p.m. Sunday.

Photos with the stars will be available in the Lighthouse Lounge in the Downtown Speakeasy from 6 to 10 p.m. for $10 per 5-by-7 print. For details, call 1-800-804-0468.

'Wing' script auctioned

John Connolly, national president of the American Federation of Television & Radio Artists, was in Pittsburgh to appear in the recent shoot for NBC's "The West Wing." He'll auction off an autographed shooting script from the episode to benefit the Dan Mallinger Memorial Scholarship Fund.

AFTRA members can bid on the script at a membership meeting Wednesday. Nonmembers can also bid. See http://aftrapgh.com/westwing.html for details.
