Festival Fare: Shortest month brings a short list of festivals

February isn't the most exciting month for festivals, at least not in the environs of Pittsburgh.
But, if you're willing to put a few miles on the car, there are places to go and things to do, such as:
Valentine Progressive Dinner & Tour. Feb. 11 & 18. Dover, Ohio. This romantic event begins with hors d'oeuvres at Olde World B&B in Dover, moves to the Springhouse B&B in Bolivar for soup and salad, then to Whispering Hills B&B Retreat in North Dover for an entree with violin accompaniment and ends at the Elson Inn B&B in Magnolia for desserts. Winter Wildlife/Whale Watching Boat Trips. Through March 4. Virginia Beach, Va. Watch endangered fin and juvenile humpback whales migrate off the coast. Cabin Fever Festival. Feb. 10 & 11. Frederick Fairgrounds, Frederick, Md. Chase away the winter blahs at this fest featuring 225 professional artists and juried craft exhibitors. Held in six heated buildings and tents, the event includes food and entertainment. Hours: 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday. The Love Chef Show. Feb. 10. Caesars Pocono Resorts. Francis Anthony, known as the "love chef," adds a touch of romance and humor to this annual cooking show. Call 800-233-4141, Ext.1969, for details.
Maymont Flower & Garden Show. Feb. 22-25. Richmond Center, Richmond, Va. Flowers in February? Sounds delightful. This annual event for the avid gardener includes horticultural lectures by experts on all aspects of gardening, judged flower show, 20 full-sized garden exhibits, bonsai plants, exotic orchids and scavenger hunts for the kids. Boston Wine Festival. Through April 6. Boston Harbor Hotel. This 13-week festival has more than 50 events, including seminars, wine tastings from a variety of vintners, and wine and gourmet food pairing dinners. Upcoming highlights include a Valentine Champagne Dinner Dance on Feb. 9 ($185 a couple) and a Rare and Fine Wine Auction and Reception Feb. 24, featuring Stephen Mould of Sotheby's London $60. 617-439-7000.
Scouting Months at Mount Vernon. Through Feb. 28. Alexandria, Va. All Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts and Camp Fire Club members in uniform are admitted free to the estates.
