Top Workplaces discover the 'secret' to a content workforce

Giving employees the freedom to work autonomously and recognizing them for outstanding performance were two attributes binding many of the winners among this year's Top Workplaces in the region.

"I am given authority to make decisions. I am not micro-managed in the day-to-day items," is how one employee of First National Bank of Pennsylvania put it when commenting on why the Pittsburgh area bank was a special place.
At FNB, which finished first in the large company category, employees also said they liked working there because they felt appreciated.
"First National Bank recognizes a job well done," said one.
Likewise at the trucking company Pitt Ohio, which placed third among the largest employers, "Words of praise from management mean a lot," an employee wrote. "I have been in jobs where credit was never given, no matter how well the job was performed."
Other top finishers in the large company category included the Monroeville-based auto dealership Day Automotive Group at No. 2, North Allegheny School District at No. 4, followed by the Downtown-based energy giant EQT Corp.
In the mid-sized company bracket (150-399 employees), the investment advisory firm of Hefren-Tillotson led the pack. Employees ranked the company high for an environment that encourages independence.
"I am relied upon and trusted to do a good job without being micro-managed," one worker wrote.
The firm "allows for entrepreneurialism and independence while offering a support structure," said another.
Hefren-Tillotson was followed by in-home senior care provider Comfort Keepers-Pittsburgh, the law firm Dickie McCamey & Chilcote, the Fairmont Pittsburgh hotel and the engineering firm Equipment & Controls.
In the small company category, the heating and air conditioning stalwart Schultheis Bros. came out on top.
The company earned praise for making employees feel appreciated.
"They do many things for the employees throughout the year to let you know how much you mean and are valued to the company," one worker wrote.
Said another: "My opinions and suggestions are respected and encouraged by the management team."
The second-place finisher was the data storage firm Avere Systems, followed by high-tech baby gear maker 4Moms, auto dealer CarSense, and hiring and assessment test provider Select International.
