Steelers Cowher responds in kind to Cleveland's accusations

Wednesday, September 20, 2000

By Ed Bouchette, Post-Gazette Sports Writer

The rematch between the Steelers and Cleveland Browns will be Oct. 22 in Three Rivers Stadium, and it sounds as if former linebacker Bill Cowher would like to get a piece of former wide receiver Dwight Clark.

Cowher, now the Steelers' coach, was irked after Clark, now the Browns' director of football operations, charged that a hit on Cleveland punter Chris Gardocki Sunday was premeditated.

"I have no reaction to Dwight," Cowher said. "He appears to have comments every time we play."

After the Steelers' 43-0 victory over the Browns in the 1999 opener, Clark accused the Steelers of deliberately running up the scoring by continuing to pass in the second half against an expansion club in its first game.

On Sunday, linebacker Joey Porter blocked Gardocki after two punts when the Steelers kept their first-team defense on the field in case the Browns faked a punt and tried to run a play. Gardocki had the wind knocked out of him on the second play and twice made an obscene gesture toward the Steelers' sideline.

"At least we know the rules now," Clark said.

Cowher said he talked to Porter.

"If it's something that was perceived as being cheap, it was certainly something I do not condone," Cowher said. "It was certainly nothing that was premeditated."

As for Clark, Cowher said, "I'm glad they finally now know the rules."
