Steelers Steelers Report: 9/20/00

Wednesday, September 20, 2000

By Ed Bouchette, Post-Gazette Sports Writer

HB Richard Huntley will be listed as doubtful this week because of a hamstring injury. Coach Bill Cowher will list four players as questionable -- NT Kendrick Clancy (ankle), S Lee Flowers (groin), DE Chris Sullivan (back) and WR Troy Edwards (hamsring). NT Kimo von Oelhoffen (calf) will be probable. Even if Edwards' health improves, Hines Ward might remain the starter. He led the Steelers with five receptions and returned a kickoff 57 yards against the Browns. Cowher, asked if Ward might remain at flanker instead of Edwards, said: "He's seized the opportunity, and he's going to play a lot of football for us, no question. Hines has been a guy, whatever you ask him to do, he does it very well. Covers kicks, returns kicks. He's a very unselfish football player and really a joy to have around. He's a tough kid, reliable, dependable. A good football player."

Titans Coach Jeff Fisher said he might wait until the weekend to decide whether to start injured Steve McNair or Neil O'Donnell at QB, and that will affect the Steelers' defensive game plan. Cowher said the strategy to defend either would change. "It will, because of Steve's mobility. We'll be able to call the game accordingly, but certainly one guy presents a mobility issue you have to be ready to deal with."

Cowher and his staff reviewed tapes of the five Kent Graham passes that were batted down at the line of scrimmage by the Browns and could find no explanation for it. They have ruled out that Graham is locked in on one area. "It's unusual a guy 6-5, Kent's size, to have five balls batted down and really five receivers who were open. That was unfortunate, but I didn't see anything that was glaring. It did not seem to be a pattern the other day with Kent."

Cowher had little reaction to the news that the officials admitted they were wrong by not stopping the clock at the end of the game in Cleveland when Graham was sacked. "We should have never put them in that situation. That's my only response. We have no one to blame but ourselves."

Cowher has sent a video tape of a play he acknowledged showed one Browns defender hitting Graham in the head. Cowher could not remember who the offender was. "We sent it in, just to be reviewed."
