WASHINGTON -- Pennsylvania Republican Bill Shuster could be named chairman of the U.S. House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee as soon as Wednesday.
The House Republican Steering Committee has included him on a list of recommended chairmanships. The recommendations are expected to be presented to the full House for ratification Wednesday.
Approval would make Mr. Shuster, of Blair County, the highest ranking Pennsylvania congressman.
"The House of Representatives is an outpost in Democratic-controlled Washington for the priorities of the American people, and I have every confidence that the chairmen selected today are up to the task of translating those priorities into solutions Americans are counting on to get our economy moving again," said House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, in releasing the recommendations tonight.
If ratified, seven of the 19 House committees will have new chairmen. Three of the new chairmen -- Jeb Hensarling, who was tapped for Financial Services; Lamar Smith for Science and Mike McCaul for Homeland Security and Pete Sessions for Rules --- are Texans. Also recommended were Ed Royce of California for Foreign Affairs and Bob Goodlatte of Virginia for Judiciary.
Mr. Shuster would take over for John Mica of Florida. Caucus term limits prevented Mr. Mica from remaining chairman for a seventh year, although that rule was waived for former vice presidential candidate Paul Ryan of Wisconsin, who has been recommended for a fourth term as Budget Committee chairman.
Mr. Shuster has been a member of the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee for 11 years and chairman of the subcommittee on Economic Development, Public Buildings, Energy and Management. He follows in the footsteps of his father, former Congressman Bud Shuster, who led the committee from 1995 to 2001.
In the term that begins in January the committee is expected to consider a broad spectrum of legislation involving highways, electric grid regulation and the movement of oil and gas through pipelines.
