West Virginia coach Dana Holgorsen named redshirt senior Clint Trickett his starting quarterback Tuesday, two months before the season opener against Alabama in the Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game.

A year ago, Holgorsen left the quarterback competition open, and things could hardly have gone more poorly. Paul Millard and Ford Childress each got two unremarkable starts before Trickett, a transfer from Florida State, finally took the reins. West Virginia finished 4-8 and missed out on a bowl game for the first time since 2001.

Trickett, who completed 123 of 233 passes for 1,605 yards and seven touchdowns last season, missed spring practices after offseason shoulder surgery.
