FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. -- Clemson tight end Dwayne Allen said he's not going to let footage from West Virginia's loss to Syracuse earlier this year fool him.
Tight end Nick Provo had a banner day for the Orange in October, exploiting the Mountaineers defense for three touchdown receptions.
"That can be a bit misleading," Allen said.
"A guy who had a big game against them was Nick Provo from Syracuse. He's a very talented tight end. I respected him a lot. A great blocker, great receiver, and he created mismatches, but that was in a loss. Teams look at that, correct their mistakes."
Allen said he thinks West Virginia's defense is underrated and has been impressed with cornerback Keith Tandy, linebacker Najee Goode, defensive tackle Julian Miller and defensive end Bruce Irvin.
"They've got playmakers all over the board," Allen said. "It's important for us, to not only watch film and get their defensive scheme, but get a feel for their playmakers."
West Virginia defensive coordinator Jeff Casteel said Allen and Brandon Ford pose challenges at the tight end position for his defense.
"They really have two outstanding tight ends, and again, they have the ability to spread the ball out throughout their offense, and they're very balanced in what they do and they're unorthodox in what they do in terms of formations and the way they deploy their kids and try to gain numerical advantages against you defensively," Casteel said.
"They're a challenge. They're a challenge not only because they're very skilled; they're a challenge because of their scheme and the way they attack you."
Walk-on receiver Connor Arlia was still in the hospital Sunday with a broken leg from a jet ski accident that occurred Saturday at an Orange Bowl beach party, coach Dana Holgorsen said. He said Arlia had been improving at practice and was no novice on a jet ski. "It happened to a kid who's been riding jet skis his whole life," he said. "It's just an accident. Things happen. Such is life, right? You've got to move on." ... West Virginia players will attend a Miami Heat game tonight against the Atlanta Hawks.
