Bob: Gerry, did jack lambert attend yesterday? and nice to see bradshaw was another no-show
Gerry Dulac: Bob, I didn't see him, but that doesn't mean he wasn't there. The cathedral was packed and impossible to see everyone.
Gerry Dulac: But you're right about Bradshaw
Mike: If Mahomes is there at 30, do we take him?
Gerry Dulac: No, not that QB.....
Marcus: Gerry, i saw last week and with the above answer, do you happen to think that if Webb was there, we'd take him?
Gerry Dulac: I know they really like him but I just couldn't imagine using the 30th pick on a QB when you are so close to the Super Bowl and need just one missing piece (and it ain't QB). To me, that would be a big mistake.
Plus, here's something else to consider....how would Ben react to having his successor already on the team? What message would that send to him? Do you think he would react kindly to it? I'm guessing it would not go over well.
Big John: Gerry ..great chat as always...Why are all the So-called experts picking a QB as our 1st round pick?
Gerry Dulac: Because the word is spreading since I first mentioned it at the NFL owners meetings....
Evan: Do the Steelers expect to hear a decision by league about Martavis by the draft? This unknown must complicate things to an extent no?
Gerry Dulac: I don't think they know when it will come down, to be honest.
Guest: Hi Gerry, saw a dumb article on 'sure fire' HOFer QBs playing today on ESPN (i think haha) Brady, Brees, Rodgers and 'potentially' Ben. Yet Ben is top 10 in yards, TD passes and has 2 fancy rings. I just don't get the logic :) FYI love the chats
Gerry Dulac: Those things are ridiculous. They didn't mention Eli either?? Brady for sure. But what have the others done more than Ben? Or Eli? Nothing.
Billy: Does a drafted corner have a path to start on the outside over Cockrell, or are they looking at someone who can play the slot or be developed as an outside starter
Gerry Dulac: Yes he does, especially a first or second rounder, for sure. As Tom Donahoe used to say, they're not bringing them in to lead the band at halftime.
LilBen: Steelers were 3 for 9 in 2-point conversions last year. The previous year they were 8 for 11. Pretty big drop-off considering how much they practice that. Do you think they'll continue to lead the league in 2-point conversion attempts, even though they haven't seen as much success recently?
Gerry Dulac: That has been Mike Tomlin's mentality, and I don't expect it to change.
Cliff: Other than Brady retiring, what do you think the three things the Steelers need to do to compete with the Patriots for preeminence in the AFC? It's hard to believe the entire answer is a better secondary.
Gerry Dulac: 1) Have Tom Brady retire
2) Have Tom Brady switch to WR
3) Have Tom Brady try baseball
Dex: With so much depth in the draft at positions of need do you see Steelers trading down at all to get more picks?
Gerry Dulac: It wouldn't shock me.
Quinn: Would the Steelers ever go after Anquan Boldin
Gerry Dulac: I never say never but I hope not. Time has passed him by.
Joe P.: If they go offense in the first round, do you think depth exists as OLB and CB to find potential starters there later in the draft?
Gerry Dulac: There is, especially at corner, but that is why I think they will take an OLB first if there is one on the board who merits a first-round pick. They will not reach. But, if they would take an offensive player on the first round, it will more than likely be a WR. It won't be a RB. They will take a RB later, perhaps by the fourth round
Carl: a lot of mocks have Steelers taking Peppers or Melifonwu at #30. Isn't corner a MUCH greater need than safety?? Am I missing something?
Gerry Dulac: No, the reason why is because the Steelers are looking for the best DEFENSIVE BACK they can use in their nickel and dime packages. They want a playmaker who can play man coverage. If it's a safety, fine. He might not start right away with Davis and Mitchell, but he will eventually move Mitchell out in another year or so.
Cliff: Love the humor of the Brady response. But seriously, why is it that some teams and some coaches apparently can solve Brady but the Steelers just don't? Is it mystique or do the Steelers just bring out the best in Gisele's husband?
Gerry Dulac: I think he's just a bad matchup for them. But, the other thing is, if the Steelers don't generate pressure on him then it doesnt matter if youre playing man coverage or zone. The teams that have success (I use that word loosely) are the ones who pressure him and hit him.
Guest: Adding to your answer on the HOF QBs I agree. I even think Eli gets overlooked A LOT as you don't win 2 rings just by fluke. People still say Ben played horrible in XL but they forget the first 3 games that they don't win because he played lights out #stairwayto7 :)-
Gerry Dulac: Bingo, hold your cards
David: If Corey Davis or John Ross is available at 30 do you think we pull the trigger?
Gerry Dulac: I don't think either of them will be. I really like Ross's speed. I think he has a better chance to drop than Davis, but I think both of them will be gone at 30
Marcus: i agree about it not going over well, but isn't that kind of ben's fault when he comes out and drags on the retirement question?
Gerry Dulac: Yes, to a large degree. Brings it on himself. Great point
Joe P.: What type of RB do you think they are interested in drafting?
Gerry Dulac: The one they like the best. Look at Bell's past two backups -- Blount was a big power back; DeA Williams was a smaller, scatback type. So I don't think body type will matter as much as one they like. But, because you asked, my guess it will be the smaller, quicker back, which is what they were looking at last year in the middle rounds.
lebo guy: Mitch Tubisky, if he's there?
Gerry Dulac: No.
me: Wouldn't James Conner make a lot of sense for them in the middle rounds?
Gerry Dulac: Wont get an argument from me, but no sooner than round 5
William: If you were a betting man, would you put money down on the Steelers drafting a QB in the first 3 rounds?
Gerry Dulac: I'd say no. But somewhere in round 5 or 6
Just Wonderin: Why wouldn't the Steelers look into a trade for Richard Sherman? Please don't say "it's not their style"... They have made draft day trades for players in the past (Bettis), and could do it again if the situation were right. Tell me why this would not be a good situation. Thanks.
Gerry Dulac: Depends on the asking price. It would probably be too high. Plus, it's not their style (sorry, couldn't resist)
Big John: I am really liking Barnett or Charlton as our #i pick at 30. Who do you see at 30?
Gerry Dulac: Barnett is more their size. Charlton is too tall for that position, more suited as a 4-3 DE
Gerry Dulac: Well, kids, that's all the time we have today. Next week, I will give you my first-round pick. See you then
