The Steelers placed wide receiver Markus Wheaton and defensive end Cam Heyward on injured reserve today. Taking their place on the 53-man roster are linebacker Bud Dupree and halfback Daryl Richardson.
Wheaton, a starter the past two years opposite Antonio Brown, has played just three games this season, starting two as he tried to fight through a near season-long shoulder injury. He had four catches for 51 yards and one touchdown.
Heyward announced previously that his season was finished after a pectoral muscle was torn in last Sunday’s game against Dallas. He and Wheaton cannot return to play this season. Wheaton is in the fourth and final year of his rookie contract.
Dupree started five of 16 games as a rookie in 2015 after the Steelers drafted him in the first round. He had abdominal surgery and was placed on injured reserve the first week of the season. He had four sacks last season.
Richardson played in the first three games of the season while Le’Veon Bell was suspended but was released and signed to the practice squad Oct. 3.
