Lions wide receiver Quinshad Davis catches a pass during a joint practice with the Steelers Tuesday in Latrobe.
guest: When other teams start making cuts, what positions do we seek new signees?- DLine depth or secondary?
Gerry Dulac: I would think secondary perhaps, but I'm not sure that would be the case either. Depends if there is another injury. But I think right now they feel they have the players, it's just a matter of finding the right combos.
Cameron: Hi Gerry, have you seen Shamarko in coverage situations? How does he look?
Gerry Dulac: Shamarko has come to camp lighter and quicker and seemingly more comfortable, but until you see him in games against other competition we won't know if he has cut down on the mental mistakes thaT led to his benching last year
guest: Is Mike Mitchell fully healthy? I don't like hearing how he played with pain or nagging injuries after the fact?
Gerry Dulac: I agree. A lot of players are playing w pain and injuries throughout the season and never talk about it. To me, it always smacks of an excuses or some form of self bravado. But, yes, he appears healthy and should be even better this season.
guest: Has Dupree really shown enough in camp to justify the thoughts and hopes that he can get double digit sacks this year? I liked what I saw last year and really want him to be a next great Steeler linebacker.
Gerry Dulac: No, he really hasn't shown anything in camp because he has missed the past five practices. He did return yesterday but he was limited in what he did, I like what I see in Dupree and think he can be a disruptive edge guy, but I need to see more in year two. Sure, he had 4 sacks last year, but none in the final 10 games
guest: Will Artie Burns play in the preseason opener?
Gerry Dulac: It depends if he practices today, but I'm going to guess no
guest: Any db's that you could foresee making an impact that didn't last year... i.e. grant
Gerry Dulac: Well, the easy answer to that question is Artie Burns and Sean Davis because they weren't with the team last year and will get to play this year. Doran Grant is a possibility. You have heard me say a number of times that I liked Doran Grant as a boundary corner who is more fitted to zone coverage. I have been told the Steelers will take a look at him at safety very soon here in camp. Either way, I'm not saying he will be a starter but I think he has a chance to be a solid backup
guest: Do you think they regret taking Burns in round one or is it too soon to make that assessment?
Gerry Dulac: Waaaaayyyyyy too soon
guest: any guess when Ladarius will be back?
Gerry Dulac: Not sure. I'll ask Tomlin today. But they are excited to have him in their offense
OCBeachbum: Who has been the most impressive offensive player and defensive player in camp so far?
Gerry Dulac: Offense: Sammie Coates, Eli Rogers and, of course, Ben. Defense: Javon Hargrave, Sean Davis, Anthony Chickillo, not to mention 97, 91, 50. Matakevich is another. He will be a tough cut. I think he will make the team. And he should
Illoneal: Is Green going to be ready for the regular season? If not do we have enough depth at TE?
Gerry Dulac: I think so
guest: Who is the non-player guy that followed Antonio Brown around during camp? AB stayed with him during warm-ups on the sidelines. He looked like a puppy dog or a personal assistant to AB?
Gerry Dulac: I'm not sure to whom you're referring
guest: Has any of the camp darlings/hopefuls (Coates, Grimble, Matekavich, Hargrave) shown anything against the Lions in practice? I'
Gerry Dulac: Coates did for sure. And so did Hargrave. Low, forward rush who keeps moving his feet. Didn't pay attention to the others against the Lions. But Grimble did drop another pass, something he has done way too frequently at camp
guest: Who wins team MVP for the Steelers this year?
Gerry Dulac: No 7
guest: We all are aware of how great and impactful Bell is to the offense. But he's not the greatest back in the league if he's not on the field. If he continues to let down his teammates, coaches, Rooneys, etc. by continually getting suspended, when does it become better business to part with him?
Gerry Dulac: That's a good point and something of which the Steelers are well aware. Same with Martavis Bryant. I'm certain Bryant will not get a second contract from the Steelers because he has lied to them and misrepresented the fact that he was doing all the right things after the first suspension. I'm certainly not giving Bell a pass here. He's had two incidents already and who knows if there will be another. But I think they are looking at the two cases differently and I think they want to keep Bell around.
OCBeachbum: Who is in charge of scouting WR's for the Steelers? Who gets the credit for finding the late round gems like AB? Where did Eli Rogers come from? Sorry for all the questions, it's just amazing how we get these guys.
Gerry Dulac: Randy Fichtner, the team's QB coach, is the person who spotted AB. He was at a Central Michigan workout to scout their QB and he noticed Brown. Bruce Arians took a look at him and the Steelers loved him. I'm not sure who spotted Rogers, but they do like him as a slot guy.
Cameron: Does AB's show boating in camp bother you? Is he getting too big for his britches or Is it just competitive nature
Gerry Dulac: It does to some extent. But it shows the love and passion he has for the game and catching footballs, especially the latter.
guest: Should they try to bring back troy hahaha just kidding. In your opinion are the Steelers the best at assessing WR talent on the nfl or does it help to habe a good franchise QB?
Gerry Dulac: I think having a QB such as Ben really helps but there is no question they have done a good job getting productive receivers such as Hines Ward (3), Mike Wallace (3), Martavis Bryant (4) and AB (6) no earlier than the third round. You might want to throw Sammie Coates (3) in there as well.
guest: I'm aware of the Jarvis Jones and bust talk. Even if he hasn't lived up to his first round status, he is still better than a lot of what's out there. Would he be a possibility to sign a fair contract with us, or would he be over-paid by others thinking he'll become the first round talent he was expected to be? At worst, after this year, he'd be a great third or back-up linebacker for us.
Gerry Dulac: I agree, but I do believe some team desperate for an edge rusher will over pay for him. Happens every year in free agency. Let's see what happens this year. I have always thought, if he could stay on the field, he would be more productive and his confidence would grow. But he doesn't get that chance because of injuries and James Harrison. I get why they play Harrison, but it has retarded Jones' development. And he's your future, not 92
chris m: I keep hearing Eli Rogers' name a lot. Any chance he not only makes the team, but jumps DHB as the #4?
Gerry Dulac: He makes the team, rubber stamp. But the Steelers don't number their receivers in a pecking order. They use them in different formations and personnel groupings. Rogers is a slot receiver. DHB lines as the No. 2 receiver sometimes in run situations. Put any number you want on them. Doesnt make a difference
Gerry Dulac: Well kids, as I said, got to get to the Mike Tomlin news conference. Thanx for the questions. Bye now
