Steelers running back Fitzgerald Toussaint picks up yardage against the Broncos during an AFC playoff matchup in January.
Gerry Dulac: OK let's get our chat started. I'm sorry for the delay and any future delays. The wi-fi source at the owners meetings is being used by lots and lots of media.
The Card Says Moops: Is this team actually considering keeping Cortez Allen, or are they just paying lip service to that idea until they get rid of him?
Gerry Dulac: I can't believe they would consider keeping him at his price. If they do, they will have to drastically reduce his salary or cut him.
Guest: Gerry, can you give us the names of a few mid-round CB prospects the Steelers might target? Thanks
Gerry Dulac: Not right now. As we get closer maybe. Have a hard enough time zeroing in on top 1-3 picks.
Guest: What is the weather like in Florida? Getting any golf in?
Gerry Dulac: Breezy and not exactly balmy. But better than Pgh.
dave: Did they try to re-sign McLendon?
Gerry Dulac: Not really. They knew he might test the market. They weren't going to chase him
Guest: Think the Steelers might look for a #3 RB in the draft or just stick with Trouisssant?
Gerry Dulac: They have no problems w Fitz Toussaint
The Card Says Moops Must Die: As of right now, Steelers defense better or worse than unit that walked off the field in Denver?
Gerry Dulac: Actually, that defense that day, along with the one in Cincy week earlier, was pretty good. For 3½ quarters in each game it was very good. If you don't think so, then you are extremely unrealistic.
Guest: Who will the Steelers take in Round 1? Early guess from you. My early guess is Andrew Billings.
Gerry Dulac: Wrong
dave: How high a priority is DL now?
Gerry Dulac: It's a priority for depth. But it's not urgent. I think you will see it addressed within the first 3 rounds, no later than 4th.
Keith: If it's your choice, with both being on the board at 25, who are you taking, William Jackson or Andrew Billings?
Gerry Dulac: Jackson
Gerry Dulac: I don't evaluate 4-3 defensive tackles because the Steelers don’t play a 4-3. But I will say this about Robinson, he can play DE in a 3-4. And very well.
The Card Says Moops Must Die: Defense has not been the same since Hamp left. McLendon played 30% of the snaps because he was just a guy. Upgrade to a guy who can play 3 downs, you'll see the entire defense get better. So, the answer is Billings.
Gerry Dulac: Your logic is twisted. They're not looking for a nose tackle because they use him only once every four plays. They don't do that because the nose tackle is not very good or not Casey Hampton. They do that because that's the way the league is now -- using multiple receiver formations to force teams into their sub package defenses with 5 and 6 DBs. The NT has been devalued
Guest: Do you think they'll draft a backup QB in the later rounds?
Gerry Dulac: Absolutely. I venture to say it could be the first offensive player they draft, now that they've signed a tight end and left tackle and re-signed Ramon Foster in free agency.
Tship: I get the feeling that a DB at #25 is far from a certainty, in fact if DL from Baylor is there he might be the pick. I am way off base?
Gerry Dulac: I think you can easily get picked off first base.
IVAN: Hello Gerry! Andre Johnson? What about a 1 yr contract just to cover the absence of Martavis B? He doesn't have to be 1st or 2nd WR, just a possesion guy and Red Zone threat
Gerry Dulac: I think they'll take their chances w Sammie Coates. And I don't blame them
The Card Says Moops: Which first year player would help the most by taking a big leap in year two? I think it's gotta be Bud Dupree, especially if the secondary help we are seeking in the draft doesn't pan out.
Gerry Dulac: Dupree is a good one. Sammie Coates might be even better
Guest: Gerry, have you ever covered the Canadian Football League? Might you consider doing so this season? Maybe as a little blog or twitter deal.
Gerry Dulac: I have not and do not plan to do so in the future.
Gerry Dulac: You're making a big assumption that it could come down to a debate. IThey will go corner, so long as the grade is first-round quality.
Adam Backus: There are open spots for starters on the defensive side of the ball now for FS, DT, and corner. Can the Steelers fill all of these needs with the draft? Or is Colbert going to have to make some moves?
Gerry Dulac: They are looking at the draft, for the most part, to fill those holes. But, if they don't in the draft, there is still plenty of time and options after June 1 to sign someone who has been released.
Adam Backus: Hi Gerry. Cody Wallace performed better than expected last year when Pouncey went down. It really didn't look like the O-line missed a beat once he found his rhythm, and I think the Steelers like his nasty level of play. Why don't the Steelers trade Pouncey for a high draft pick and get out from underneath his massive salary?
Gerry Dulac: I will agree that Cody Wallace played very well in Pouncey's absence. But I don't think the Steelers have ever considered, or will consider, getting rid of what they consider to be the best center in the league.
IVAN: Can The Steelers reduce a salary of one player? If that is possible and Cortez A. agrees then that could be a good deal, right?
Gerry Dulac: Maybe.
The Card Says Moops Must Die: And if NT is devalued, why do they stick with what would be an antiquated defense?
Gerry Dulac: They don't. Their base defense, if you will, has become the nickel or dime. That is the modern-day defense.
Guest: It sounds like L. Green is more of a receiving TE than a blocking TE. Will that have an impact on the play calling compared to last season when they had Heath?
Gerry Dulac: Not necessarily the play-calling, but some of the routes. Green is more of a vertical threat, a down-the-seams kind of receiver, like Heath was in his younger years.
Alan: If Billings and a solid CB are there at pick 25, what do you think the Steelers would do?
Gerry Dulac: See earlier answer cause it was intended for this question which I thought I posted and didn't. Sorry
Adam Backus: Gerry are you taking a nap?
Gerry Dulac: Brief wireless hiccup.
Adam Backus: is Ryan Shazier poised for a huge year? Potentially the Troy Polamalu of the LB corps?
Gerry Dulac: If he can stay healthy, agreed.
Adam Backus: Shamarko Thomas- What went wrong?
Gerry Dulac: Three blown coverages in the preseason, that's what
Mike: I feel sometimes people get caught up on the Steelers lossing cornerbacks. But im of the thought that they weren't that good. Im ok with the younger guys and draft picks getting to play. Your thoughts?
Gerry Dulac: Agree 100 percent. Why would they want to bring back everyone from the 30th ranked pass defense? Now that would be insanity
Steve_from_NC: Do you think management is looking to extend Timmons?
Gerry Dulac: I believe they do
Adam Backus: any word on Senquez's recovery from his season ending shoulder injury?
Gerry Dulac: All seems to be good
Adam Backus: With Senquez Golson coming back this year the Steelers essentially are getting two 2nd round picks. Do the Steelers see Senquez as a starter or are they expecting him to play the slot?
Gerry Dulac: That's right. Right now, they view him as a starter, if for no other reason than they don't have another starter opposite William Gay, aka, the Bobble Walker
Gerry Dulac: OK, kids, that's all the time we have today. Hope you enjoyed the chat and sorry for the periodic delays.
