Gerry Dulac: OK let's get our chat started. Fire away....
Andrew: Are there any young players stashed on this roster that the coaches are high on that just needed some time to season?
Gerry Dulac: About the only one that jumps out to me is CB Doran Grant, who was cut, brought back to the practice squad and then elevated to the 53-man roster. I think he has a chance to develop and be a good player.
dave: Were you surprised by Tomlin's candid response about Cortez Allen?
Gerry Dulac: I was -- not because of the content, just that he admitted it in that forum.
mike: So did Skip Bayless ever apologize to Antonio Brown for backing Yack Man JOnes faking accusations?
Gerry Dulac: Don't know. I don't listen to mindless people
fineine: Why do you think the Steelers had a good shot vs New England? Brady would have torched that secondary while the Steelers would settle for FGs.
Gerry Dulac: I've said before and I'll say it again, if the Steelers won in Denver, they would have gone to New England and won there, even with Tom Brady. The reason: They had gone there earlier in the year and, hard as it is to believe, did a decent job against him. Plus, they are playing much better defensively now than they were then. What's more, if they had won in Denver, that would have only furthered proof of their resolve, character and will. I saw it before in 2005. I was starting to see it again.
TX_Steeler: I see the Steelers' needs in the draft at OL, DL and Safety before cornerback. Disagree?
Gerry Dulac: Very much so. OL? Really.
Krugerrand: Antonio Brown seems to have a tremendous work ethic. Do you know if the two years he played with Hines Ward played any part of that?
Gerry Dulac: None. He was always that way. Plus Hines never worked that hard. Nobody does.
Fargo Steeler: Do you agree with the last 2-3 series of play calling in the Denver game? Calls seemed very vanilla didn't seem to be in a hurry.
Gerry Dulac: I didn't like the execution, not the play-calling
Gerry Dulac: Woodley right up there because of the size of the deal ...and the size of him. Kendall Simmons
Rich: AV is the obvious left tackle next year right? Also secondary heavy in the draft again?
Gerry Dulac: Not if Kelvin Beachum comes back. Yes, more so than last year.
Ed: Will we ever know if AB would have been cleared for the AFCC Game had the Steelers beaten Denver?
Gerry Dulac: We don't know now because we don't have to know. But I'm sure we will eventually find out
GSK: With no 5th or 6th round draft pick this year do you see the Steelers making a move to acquire more picks or be more active in free agency?
Gerry Dulac: Absolutely. There are few very players who have any type of marketability that they would be willing to part with who would command a fifth- or sixth-round pick. Sean Spence? Vince Williams? Cam Thomas maybe. The most likely is K Shaun Suisham. He's the NFL most accurate kicker the previous three seasons and his cap number is nearly $3 million more than Chris Boswell ($575K) for 2016. Plus he's 10 years older than Boz. Believe me, the Steelers don't want to go into the draft without a fifth- and sixth-round choice.
Fargo Steeler: Will they be able to keep Foster and Willie Gay? Nothing behind Gay at CB obviouly.(Tomlinism)
Gerry Dulac: Foster likely will be gone,. Not going to chase him. They will bring back Gay because I don't see him commanding any type of big money in free agency. Plus they don't have a lot. And he's the best right now of what they have.
The Card Says Moops: Is Mike Tomlin too supportive of his players, meaning, do you feel there is enough accountability for poor performances.
Gerry Dulac: After what you just witnessed, what do you think??
dave: Any chance they'll cut Timmons due to his large cap number?
Gerry Dulac: None.
Alan: Do you think the Steelers should target a CB in the first round of the draft if there's a good one available?
Gerry Dulac: Not just the first round, the first two rounds, Like they did with LBs Timmons, Woodley) in 2007 and OL (DeCastro, Adams) in 2012
Fargo Steeler: I hope they find a new punter as Berry is not making the standard the standard IMO. Do you agree?
Gerry Dulac: He's not that bad
Rich: So AV would be a backup? IDK about that one.
Gerry Dulac: Yes. He will be given every chance to compete for that job, whether with Beachum or even Mike Adams. I dpoubt the Seelers are going to let both of those guys go and hand the job over to AV without any solid backup
Scott from Erie: I don't feel like we've ever gotten the full inside scoop on what happened with Cortez Allen this year...was he truly injured or was his performance so bad in training camp that they decided they wanted to cut him (but couldn't due to salary cap implications)?
Gerry Dulac: His performance was bad. He was benched two years in as row before he ever got injured.
Andrew: There has been a lot of outside noise about Tomlin being on the hot seat this year. Was there any internal rumblings about his job being in jeopardy?
Gerry Dulac: None. Never. Just from those on social media who are clueless.
The Card Says Moops: Can Jesse James be the pass-catching tight end people are saying we need? What is he missing if anything...he has looked pretty good in limited opportunities.
Gerry Dulac: I think the word you used is what is applicable here -- limited. I think he can be a good No. 2 tight end. But I don't think they envision him as a young Heath Miller or a modern-day Travis Kelce.
Tship: The one guy that is on the team now that may be under the radar in the national media but is on the verge of being a great player is ? For me it is Tuitt.
Gerry Dulac: I won't argue with that
Scott from Erie: Whats your take on the special teams play in Denver? I guess Jordan Berry was hurt...but what about Markus Wheaton on punt returns? Don't you think the Steelers should have had a more experienced returner in there?
Gerry Dulac: I gave special teams a D-minus for their play in Denver, and the only reason it wasn't an F is because Chris Boswell nailed 3 more FGs again. That's what I thought their special-teams play. Terrible
TX_Steeler: I feel like the bigger disappointment this year was the offense. Yes they were record setting and high-flying, but they were not as good as their talent in the red zone or scoring points. The defense was supposed to be bad, but often held opponents to a low enough total that the offense should have easily won the game (including in Denver). What do you think?
Gerry Dulac: Here's my answer -- No Maurkice Pouncey (18G), Le'Veon Bell (12 games), Kelvin Beachum (12G), Ben (5G), Bryant (5G), DeA Williams (2G)
dave: Which of their own free agents will they most want to re-sign?
Gerry Dulac: Of the significant ones, only Gay.
Ed: Who is responsible for naming starters? HC, coordinator, or position coach? i.e., who decides Blake starts, Jacoby gets punt returns, etc.? When Bryant got benched a few weeks ago mid game, who makes that call?
Gerry Dulac: Same guy as always -- MT
Andrew: Do you see the Steelers resigning Bell this offseason? Odds that it happens?
Gerry Dulac: Can you put odds greater than 100 percent????
Jimmy McNulty: What's your take on all this Antwaan Randle El stuff?
Gerry Dulac: I feel bad for him. Very sad
TX_Steeler: Was Senquez Golson around the team much during the year? I don't recall seeing him or hearing him mentioned as someone at the facilities, meetings, etc.
Gerry Dulac: Well, you wouldn't have seen him. And you didn't hear from him because the Steelers don't permit interviews with players who are on IR.
Scott from Erie: Mike Adams is under contract with the Steelers in 2016, correct? I read a report that this was the case due to his injury status this year (although I don't recall the Post Gazette confirming this). If so, does that make Beachum expendable since we have Villanueva as well?
Gerry Dulac: The Steelers will not be rid of both Adams and Beachum. The LT position is too valuable to just leave it one person like AV, who showed he can at least be a dependable backup. I'm not sure of Adams' contract status. Ill have to check. But they have a better chance of signing Beachum now because he was injured than if he was healthy and played the full season. Then he would have been a desired commodity on the FA market.
Gerry Dulac: That's all the time we have today kids, Thanx for the questions.
