Comment From Dude_From_Cali
Ed: Steelers would've gotten past Cindy. Your prediction Steelers would've been lost @ Denver and Pats?

1:34

Ed Bouchette:
That's a big assumption, that they would have gotten past Cincinnati. This is a team that lost at home in the snow to Miami, which did not make the playoffs.

1:35

Comment From Taz
Hi Ed! Hope you're staying warm. Is there any way the Steelers could make a reduced contract enticing to expensive veterans (like Troy) by offering the money up front as a signing bonus rather than distributed as salary? Does that mitigate risk for the player?

1:35

Ed Bouchette:
Not really because the vested vet is guaranteed that money if he's on the roster for the first game anyway.

1:35

Comment From Mark
Hi Ed.....any chance the Steelers will finally draft / sign a punter worth his salt....and one that will stay healthy for an entire season....frutrating to see other teams find punters while we just can't quite seem to get it right.....your thoughts....and yes I know they just signed some kid from LSU....thank you!

1:36

Ed Bouchette:
I've always felt you do not need to draft a punter. The Steelers won two Super Bowls with punters you never heard of.

1:36

Comment From Sam
Hi Ed, any offseason plans for you to do any more Top 10 specials or maybe even A Football Life?

1:37

Ed Bouchette:
NFL Films just interviewed me on Monday for shows they will be doing on the drafts of 1974, 1994 and 2004. I assume they will show those around the time of this year's draft.

1:37

Comment From Dude_From_Cali
Ed: was it customary fair market to get a 4th rd pick SHARMARKO THOMAS and give up a third? seems fair to give up 4th to get a 4th?

1:38

Ed Bouchette:
Yes, but you are giving up a future third-round pick for a fourth-round pick. Current year is always more valuable than future years. That was market value.

1:38

Comment From Chunkles
Seems like the Rooney's are happy with Tomlin? What about hiring a assistant head coach to help him better manage his team? It appears like he is overwhelmed with all the decisions a good head coach makes. Even coach Cowher had an assistant.

1:39

Ed Bouchette:
I'm not sure what you mean by an "assistant.'' Russ Grimm was "promoted" to assistant head coach under Bill Cowher and currently John Mitchell holds that title under Mike Tomlin.

1:39

Comment From Sam
Ed, are there any Steeler staff members, whether a coach or front office personel, that may be targeted for interviews by other teams this offseason?

1:40

Ed Bouchette:
You never know, but I have heard of none.

1:40

Comment From Dude_From_Cali
Ed: how come most Steelers fan not seem to be angered or bothered by missing the playoffs? Anything's possible post season or they knew we would go far?

1:40

Ed Bouchette:
You do not have access to my email or you would not assume that.

1:40

Comment From DC
Ed, what are the odds Lamar Woodley will be wearing an Arizona Cardinals uniform this fall?

1:41

Ed Bouchette:
I have not seen those odds. I do think there is a chance he won't be wearing the Steelers uniform but then with all of his injuries, he's worn that uniform less often over the past 3 seasons anyway.

1:41

Comment From Brandon
Do you feel Bickel's firing was deserved or was he the sacrificial lamb.....seems to me the line finally made some positive strides and potentially becomes a real asset next year....and who do you see staying / going...thanks!

1:42

Ed Bouchette:
As Gerry Dulac noted, Jack Bicknell's duties were diminished over the course of the season. The Steelers did not give him credit with the line's improvement.

1:42

Comment From Tbomb75205
Had KC been able to hold a 28 point, then all four visiting teams would have won this weekend. Were you more surprised KC couldn't hold the lead, or if they had, that all four visitors would have won?

1:43

Ed Bouchette:
Actually, I did not give it much thought. I did like Green Bay, Cincinnati and Philadelphia to win, though.

1:43

Comment From Corey
Allen Robinson or Kelvin Benjamin? Both may be available in the second round, assuming we go CB first.

1:44

Ed Bouchette:
Ben Roethlisberger used the no-huddle more often and got rid of the ball more quickly. Le'Veon Bell worked back from his foot injury and became a viable target in the passing game. Heath Miller returned to the lineup and became healthier in the second half of the season. Etc., etc.

1:44

Comment From Pastor Mark
I was wondering if you heard Bill Belichek's comment that the reduced practices, OTAs, etc under the new NFL/NFLPA is the reason for many of the injuries we're seeing. Does Tomlin think that, or no comments regarding the injuries?

1:45

Ed Bouchette:
I have not heard Mike talk on the subject.

1:45

Comment From Tbomb75205
Is the outlook for the AFC North in 2014 better, about the same, or worse than it finished in 2013?

1:45

Ed Bouchette:
Well, it's hard for it to finish worse since the division champ is guaranteed a playoff spot and since no other team made it and then the division champ lost at home in its first playoff game.

1:45

Comment From Mark
Who do you see backing up L. Bell next year...Dwyer,LS Howlings.....was very impressed with Bell's overall work this year.....finally, a good draft choice....thanks!

1:46

Ed Bouchette:
They may try to sign Dwyer but if not, they have no backups at the moment under contract. I don't think Stephens-Howling would be the top backup if they re-sign him.

1:47

Comment From Eli
Any merit to the rumor that the Steelers "settled" for the recently fired offensive line coach? Is it really that undesirable of a job?

1:47

Ed Bouchette:
It was not a rumor, I wrote that.

1:47

Comment From Dave412
Whth all the contact do you look at this practice as an advantage.

1:48

Ed Bouchette:
The league doesn't seem to be too concerned as long as the TV numbers keep climbing. Why else would they hold their Super Bowl outdoors in Northern New Jersey in February?

1:48

Comment From Tbomb75205
In Dallas, with Romo's injury, surgery and him turning 34 in May, the talk is it's time to draft the next QB. Do the Steelers have a QB on the rooster to follow Ben? If not, when is it time they should draft a serious candidate?

1:49

Ed Bouchette:
Ben will turn 32 this year. I think he can play 5 more years. I don't think it's time and I don't think they should have drafted one in the fourth round last year.

1:49

Comment From Mitch
Do you think that Mike Munchak would have any interest in the opening at o-line coach?

1:49

Ed Bouchette:
If Penn State does not hire him as its head coach, his alternatives would be to sit out and collect $3 million this year from the Titans or go to work somewhere. Why not in Pittsburgh as OLine coach?

1:50

Comment From Tbomb75205
Other than Heinz Field: best place to cover a playoff game, and worst place?

1:51

Ed Bouchette:
The absolute worst place in my opinion is Oakland, but then not many people have to worry about covering the playoffs there. The best, to me, would be Cleveland, but the same holds true there.

1:52

Comment From Tbomb75205
If you can recall back when the Steelers were last in the playoffs, how does your week's work differ between the playoffs and the regular season games?

1:52

Ed Bouchette:
I'm busy when they're in the playoffs. I look forward to the chat now.

1:53

Comment From Dave412
do you think they will let valasco and wallace walk without an offer?

1:53

Ed Bouchette:
No, I think they may give both of them offers.

1:53

Comment From DC
Ed, after what we’ve witnessed this season, do you foresee the Rules Committee making changes to allow more types of plays to be challengeable next season?

1:53

Ed Bouchette:
Yes, and I think Mike Tomlin as a member of the competition committee will be leading that band.

1:53

Comment From mikeflores16
Is this the year that we finally sign a couple of free agents who can start next year at a couple of poaitions of need?

1:54

Ed Bouchette:
I really would not count on that.

1:54

Comment From Tbomb75205
The players receive playoff shares. Do the sport writers receive some type of bonus if the home town team makes the playoffs?

1:54

Ed Bouchette:
Yes, all expenses paid to cover the team on the road.

1:54

Comment From Dude_From_Cali
Ed: what happens when due to old age, your arthritis sets in and you can't answer 80 questions in 40 minutes? What then?

1:55

Ed Bouchette:
The chat only lasts 30 minutes. Maybe we'll cut it back to 25 then.

1:55

Comment From chooch
Percentage that Ike plays S next season?

1:55

Ed Bouchette:
10

1:55

Comment From Duke
Do you know if the coaches have any faith in FS Robert Golden?

1:55

Ed Bouchette:
They wanted to, but as the season progressed, Robert Golden disappeared from the defense.

1:56

Comment From Keith
Have we seen the last of Mr. Foote in a steelers uniform or is he planning to return?

1:56

Ed Bouchette:
He plans to return. I think the Steelers would like him back.

1:56

Comment From Rick
Ed, Who is responsible for managing the salary cap? I would the Rooney's would have been more aware of the problems they were creating for future years?

1:57

Ed Bouchette:
They do not think they've created that many problems, and their creative cap maneuvering during this century not only landed them in three Super Bowls, with two winners, but kept them in the playoffs through 2011 and a playoff contender again this year through all 16 games.

1:57

Comment From Corey
Good afternoon Ed. What position could you see the Steelers going after in free agency? Cornerback (Grimes/Talib) or NT (Soliai/Cody).

1:58

Ed Bouchette:
Again, I would not count on them filling any starting positions in free agency. But there are always the Ryan Clarks out there who are under the radar and ready to blossom who do not come at a steep price. Just don't count on it.

1:58

Comment From River Rat
For those hoping for to obtain a Wide Receiver in the first round, doesn't history teach us that they will be gone in a few years if they turn out to be great?

1:59

Ed Bouchette:
Steelers history shows that, unless the receiver is named Hines Ward, who of course was not a first-round pick. You cannot draft scared, though, and if they think that is where their best value is at the time they draft, they should do it.

1:59

Comment From Sam
Hello Ed, Do the Steeler scouts evaluate both college and pro players or are they separate from each other?

1:59

Ed Bouchette:
Some are strictly college scouts but even the pro scouts evaluate college players too.

2:00

Comment From Dude_From_Cali
Ed: did you correctly predict Jarvis Jones as our first pick last year?

2:00

Ed Bouchette:
Yes, I did get lucky there.

2:01

Comment From Jon
Ed, with the massive salaries of franchise qbs affect on the cap, are the days of afford a strong offense and a strong defense a thing of the past? Should teams with elite qbs load up their offenses and hope to outscore the opponent with a mediocre or lesser (cheaper) defense? I know this might be blasphemy in Pittsburgh, but something they should consider?

2:01

Ed Bouchette:
I'm not sure I buy that elite QB stuff because the two teams with the elite of the elite, Denver and New England, are the top two seeds in the AFC. They must have money somewhere to spend on the rest of the team.

2:02

Comment From Steelers_412
Dont forget tomlin missed the playoffs 2 years now on bad calls

2:02

Ed Bouchette:
That's right, if his team had beaten Miami at home in the snow and any of the other dregs they lost two, they still would not have made the playoffs because of bad calls in other games, right?

2:02

Comment From Coach
How did Khan go from penthouse to outhouse as the salary cap guru so quickly?

2:03

Ed Bouchette:
Again, I don't think they've mismanaged the cap as many others would have you believe. He knows what he's doing.

2:03

Comment From Dude_From_Cali
If Sean spence is a stud, does he take spot over Foote or Williams?

2:04

Ed Bouchette:
Sean has to still get over a serious injury before we put him back in the stud class, but yes, if he could return to form he would be a threat

2:04

Comment From DC
What the status of Heinz Field adding those end zone seats? Is it still held up in legal limbo?

2:04

Ed Bouchette:
It's before mediation and it sounds to me as if they can get something worked out. However, it is way too later for the 2014 season.

2:05

Comment From Maya
Are you hoping for a snow storm during the SB?

2:05

Ed Bouchette:
No, because I'd be in the middle of it.

2:05

Comment From Dude_From_Cali
Ed: in Rooney logic, may be Landry Jones was 24th spot on 4th round with similar Big Ben potential. worth a gamble if Landry proved to be a stud with cheap contract?

2:06

Ed Bouchette:
Lot of ifs there. He was drafted on the fourth round for a reason, not the 11th overall pick like Ben R.

2:06

Comment From Tbomb75205
Will this be the first and only SB in a cold weather outdoor site?

2:06

Ed Bouchette:
You mean besides Dallas?

2:06

Comment From Tbomb75205
Living in Dallas and watching the three ring circus that goes on down here, the Steelers and Rooneys seem like a much better organization. How do you compare the Steelers with other owners in the league?

2:08

Ed Bouchette:
I've seen how the Steelers are run close-up for many years now and do not have that advantage elsewhere. They are among the best-run in all of sports, in my opinion. I would include the New York Giants, the New England Patriots, the Baltimore Ravens and the Green Bay Packers among others

2:09

Comment From Steelers_412
Does the nfl plan to adopt an nhl type of review system?

2:09

Ed Bouchette:
They are talking about it, having all replay reviews take place at Park Avenue in NY

2:09

Comment From Dude_From_Cali
are you a fan of ADDING 2 more playoff spots? Or cheapens the game.

2:10

Ed Bouchette:
Cheapens the game, but adds money so I expect it to happen.

2:11

Ed Bouchette:
Thanks for an extended chat. See you next Tuesday, although we may have to alter the time a bit because I have a noon meeting
