Charlie Batch will sign a one-year contract with the Steelers today, a source close to the quarterback said last night.

Batch, who is an unrestricted free agent, will earn $745,000 in 2009, plus a $50,000 signing bonus. His signing comes days after free agent Byron Leftwich signed with Tampa Bay for two years and $7.5 million. Leftwich was Ben Roethlisberger's backup last season after Batch broke his collarbone in a preseason game.

Batch, a Homestead native and Steel Valley High School graduate, has served as a backup quarterback with the Steelers since '02, when he signed as a free agent after four years as Detroit's starting quarterback.

Batch spent last season on injured reserve and remained with the team on a daily basis. He has been working out at the Steelers' South Side facility since the end of the season and has passed all of their physicals. He has played in 22 games with the Steelers and started four.
