The Pirates activated Pedro Alvarez from the bereavement list today and designated right-hander Ernesto Frieri for assignment.
Frieri joined the Pirates in a trade with the Los Angeles Angels in exchange for Jason Grilli. He had a 10.13 ERA with the Pirates in 14 outings, allowing 14 hits and 12 runs in 10 2/3 innings.
The move leaves the Pirates one man short in the bullpen for the time being.
The Pirates have 10 days to trade or release Frieri. They can also assign him to the minor leagues if he clears waivers. Frieri has enough service time to reject an outright assignment but not enough to collect the remainder of his $3.8 million salary if he does so.
