ST. LOUIS -- The Pirates on Saturday placed two players, closer Jason Grilli and catcher Russell Martin, on the 15-day disabled list and intertwined the corresponding moves to navigate league rules.

Right-hander Jared Hughes and catcher Tony Sanchez were added to the active roster.

The Pirates attempted to recall Hughes in place of Grilli, who has a strained left oblique, Friday, but it violated Major League Baseball rules and was nullified as a result. They started Grilli's DL stint retroactively on Monday, when Hughes was still on the active roster.

Saturday, they made Sanchez the corresponding move for Grilli and Hughes the corresponding move for Martin, who has a strained left hamstring.

Martin started Friday's game against the St. Louis Cardinals after missing the previous two games, but exited in the sixth inning. He had been dealing with hamstring pain in the past, manager Clint Hurdle said, but told Hurdle his hip hurt Friday night. He is returning to Pittsburgh today for a magnetic resonance imaging exam.
