Pirates spring training report: Pirates 4, Red Sox 2

Data

Starter: Wandy Rodriguez. 4 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 2 K.

Hitter: Travis Ishikawa, who went 2 for 3 with a solo home run.

Of note: The Pirates had their first encounter with the new expanded instant replay rules. Pinch-runner Michael Martinez was on second with one out in the seventh. Jaff Decker grounded back to Red Sox pitcher Burke Badenhop, who wheeled and caught Martinez in a rundown.

Third baseman Will Middlebrooks then dived to second base to tag Decker, who was trying to advance. Manager Clint Hurdle challenged the play, but the call on the field stood.

News of the day

Rodriguez pitched effectively, displaying a curveball that was sharp at times to go with a solid fastball. He struck out David Ortiz in the second inning using two fastballs high in the zone.

"I need to work on my curveball," Rodriguez said. "I don't feel my curveball is ready to go."

Rodriguez said he worked a lot on his two-seam fastball. He allowed one run in the fourth, when Dustin Pedroia doubled and scored on a and Xander Bogaerts single.

A line drive back to the mound from Shane Victorino hit Rodriguez in the upper right thigh and forearm, but he caught the ball for the final out of the third. He had a mark on his forearm but said he was fine.
