News of the day

Russell Martin hit his fourth home run of the spring, went 2 for 2 with a walk and threw out two runners attempting to steal second.

He’s batting .533 with nine RBIs in six games, and it’s safe to say it has been one of the most productive springs of his career.

“You always feel pretty good in spring, but I’ve never had these results,” Martin said. “Even 2009, most of them were pulled. I’m not hitting the ball the other way. That’s a great feeling when you hit the ball the other way like that.”

Martin said he was scuffling all season in 2013 at the plate, and never quite felt 100 percent.

“Being healthy and feeling free up there is a nice feeling. All year up there I was battling. I remember swinging at pitches and coming in and out of my swing quickly and rolling over pitches I’ve seen a gazillion times.”

This spring, he said he’s seeing the ball well and capitalizing.

“Really just hitting the mistakes. Staying aggressive, seeing the ball well and just trusting myself out there. Who knows what I can do if I believe in myself.”

Injury update

Phil Irwin (elbow) threw a bullpen session Monday morning.
