DATA

Starter: Charlie Morton — 3 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 0 K.

Hitter: Gregory Polanco went 2 for 3 with a run-scoring double and a first-inning single.

Of note: The Pirates are 5-1-1 and atop the Grapefruit League standings one week into spring training.

News of the day

Charlie Morton went three innings for the first time this spring, giving up just one hit — a double to Don Kelly in the second inning. He induced five ground-ball outs, two fly-ball outs and one infield pop-up.

“Made some decent pitches and got lucky a few times,” Morton said. “I threw a couple more off-speed pitches for strikes than last time. Start to pitch how you pitch in a game. Pitch to the hitter, who’s up there as opposed to just throwing pitches.”

Manager Clint Hurdle was happy with his right-hander.

“Charlie did look good,” Hurdle said. “Very focused this spring. A lot of intention. A lot of commitment. Had the good sinker [Tuesday] and mixed in his off-speed stuff, breaking balls. Very efficient outing.”

Injury update

Jeff Locke will not make his start today against the Blue Jays due to tightness in his right side. Jay Jackson will make the start in his place. … Gaby Sanchez (knee) is still listed as day to day.
