CINCINNATI -- Seeking reinforcements to their bullpen, the Pirates today planned to recall right-hander Duke Welker from Class AAA Indianapolis and optioned Alex Presley to Indianapolis.

Welker was on his way to Cincinnati before today's game against the Reds. The Pirates had not officially made the move as of about an hour before game time.

Four Pirates relievers -- Jason Grilli, Mark Melancon, Vin Mazzaro and Justin Wilson -- are not available for today's game after pitching during Wednesday night's 13-inning loss.

Manager Clint Hurdle said Wilson and Melancon will not be available for Friday's game against the Los Angeles Angels.

Welker, 27, was on the Pirates' roster in May but did not appear in a game. His first appearance will be his major league debut.

Welker has allowed 11 earned runs in 352/3 innings with Indianapolis this season.
