The Pirates placed James McDonald on the 15-day disabled list this afternoon after the pitcher complained of discomfort in his right shoulder.
Jeanmar Gomez will make a spot start in McDonald's place tonight against the Seattle Mariners. The Pirates made the announcement a little more than two hours before the scheduled first pitch.
McDonald struggled in six starts this season, posting a 5.76 ERA. He allowed seven earned runs in his most recent outing April 30 against the Milwaukee Brewers.
After that start, McDonald said he was healthy, though a lack of command and a decrease in velocity have plagued him this season.
"I feel fine," McDonald said.
Earlier in the season, when his velocity issues were more pronounced, McDonald said he was not injured, though he felt a bit "beat up." At the time, he said the best thing for him was to increase his workload and try and pitch through his issues.
His spot in the rotation was in jeopardy with Francisco Liriano and Charlie Morton poised to join the roster after battling injuries of their own.
The Pirates recalled infielder Josh Harrison to take McDonald's place on the 25-man roster.
Additionally, the Pirates scratched catcher Russell Martin from tonight's lineup with a stiff neck. Michael McKenry will start in his place.mobilehome - breaking - pirates
