Pirates place Walker on 15-day DL with hand injury

The Pirates placed Neil Walker on the 15-day disabled list Friday because of a cut on his right hand and recalled infielder Jordy Mercer from Class AAA Indianapolis.

Walker suffered the injury when he was cleated during last weekend's series against the St. Louis Cardinals. The move is retroactive to April 27, meaning he can come off the disabled list May 12.

Mercer was hitting .333 in 26 games for Indianapolis.

Also, the team activated right-handed reliever Jose Contreras from the disabled list and optioned right-hander Jared Hughes to Class AAA Indianapolis.

Contreras, 41, was working his way back from elbow surgery he had in June. He signed with the Pirates as a minor league free agent during spring training.
