Sidney Crosby celebrates after scoring his second goal of the night in the second period Saturday night against the New York Islanders at Consol Energy Center. The Penguins won, 5-2.
Gr8Sk8: Are the Pens *intrigued* with any UFA playing in the NCAA right now? The talent level in college hockey appears to me to have never been higher...
Seth Rorabaugh: I'd be lying if I said I was aware of them pursuing any college free agents.
guest: What is your view of Trevor Daley's play so far?
Seth Rorabaugh: He's given them a much-needed pucking moving element on the blue line. Additionally, during Kris Letang's absence, he filled in very well as the de facto No. 1 defenseman.
guest: Barring injuries do you think Derrick Pouliot will get a call-up at some point or are they still unhappy with him?
Seth Rorabaugh: A cataclysmic number of injuries on defense would need to take place in order for Derrick Pouliot to get a recall anytime soon.
west coast: How does Sullivan's system differ than Johnston's?
Seth Rorabaugh: It really doesn't differ that much. They are stressing a few more things with regards to puck movement from the blue line but there hasn't been any sort of wide ranging changes. It's difficult to implement a major change like that in-season.
Sand People: A nice win Saturday but the next 10 days starting tomorrow looks like murder. Is this a do-or-die stretch?
Seth Rorabaugh: Given the hole they started the season in, they need to get as many points as possible, particularly against divisional opponents, to reach the postseason.
guest: Does Geno work on faceoffs at all? He hasn't really improved much in that area whereas Sid improved a great deal from where he was as a younger player?
Seth Rorabaugh: I'm not sure faceoffs are a particular area Evgeni Malkin focuses on in practice, at least based on the ones I watch. He takes them in practice like any other center but I can't say I've seen him put any extra work in that area.
Gr8Sk8: Faceoff wins are overrated...some teams/lines would rather press/forecheck the puck in the offensive zone of a faceoff...back to NCAA...I asked because it seems to me that the Pens are sorely underrepresented in the NCAA ranks with top players...are you aware of any significant NCAA scouting that is done by them?
Seth Rorabaugh: I think overall faceoff numbers are overrated. WHen you break them down to situations or zones (power play, defensive zone, etc.) they tend to have more substance.
As far as the Penguins and NCAA, they currently have 11 prospects in the NCAA. I'm not sure how that stacks up to other teams, but it seems like a healthy number. Again, I'd be lying if I said I knew how they scout college teams. Like most NHL teams, they tend to draft players heading into college and not already in college.
Guest: I still feel the Penguins need someone to protect there star players. Do you see them ever getting anyone to protect them?
Seth Rorabaugh: Jim Rutherford has said they would rather have a more skilled lineup from top to bottom than a designated fighter. They don't have any interest in adding a player strictly for toughness.
Guest: Just kind of sad seeing players knocking around Latang, Crosby etc. I mean even if they kept Farnham, at least he would stand up for them. He has 5 goals also
Seth Rorabaugh: In fairness to the Penguins, they have a much deeper lineup than the Devils. Farnham was always going to get a better chance to play with the Devils than the Penguins.
