The Penguins and winger Nick Spaling avoided an arbitration hearing scheduled for today by agreeing to a two-year, $4.4 million contract.

Spaling had been a restricted free agent. The Penguins acquired him and fellow winger Patric Hornqvist from Nashville for winger James Neal in a trade earlier this summer.

Spaling, 25, had 13 goals, 32 points in 71 games for the Predators last season.
