With an eye toward helping local players develop and earn college scholarships, the Junior Penguins alre bringing Junior A hockey back to Pittsburgh.
They have been awarded a Tier III team in the Central States Hockey League beginning with the 2009-10 season. They bought a former CSHL franchise that was in Michigan.
Pittsburgh has not had a Junior A team since the Tier II Pittsburgh Forge of the North American Hockey League folded in 2003.
"We've been working at this a long time, appealing to all the leagues," Tony Maggio, managing director of the Junior Penguins, said of the new 20-and-under team. "We would like to have at least half to be local kids."
Tryouts will be in the summer.
The CSHL has teams such as the Cleveland Junior Lumberjacks, the St. Louis Junior Blues, the Chicago Force and the Queen City Steam.
