CMU has an international reputation for innovation, but the school can't calculate how to put a fishing team on the water.

The Carnegie Mellon collegiate fishing team, which has competed in FLW and other circuits, will sit out the 2014 season for lack of a boat. Last year FLW stopped providing a boat for the team. Club member Eric Bykowsky said the team's support group has allocated $7,500 for a boat, motor and trailer, but the rig won't be available until August, forcing them to miss this year's tournaments.

"Most of the tournaments aren't local -- we have to trailer the boat a long way," said Bykowsky. "Borrowing a boat from someone local just hasn't been an option."

Doe tags, split seasons

The Dec. 26-Jan. 24 Antlerless Extended Regular Firearms deer season will continue to be managed by county instead of Wildlife Management Unit, and antlerless allocations in most urban areas are down.

The Game Commission announced that antlerless allocations in 2B, which includes most of Allegheny County, will drop for the first time in years from 62,000 to 60,000, and 2C tags will drop from 43,000 to 38,000. For a full allocations list visit www.pgc.state.pa.us.

Also, the board set a split, five-day antlered season (Dec. 1-5) and seven-day concurrent season (Dec. 6-13) in WMUs 2A, 2C, 2D, 2E, 2F, 2G, 2H, 3B, 3C, 4B, 4D and 4E, and added the concurrent season in 4A and 4C. The two-week (Dec. 1-13) concurrent, antlered and antlerless deer season will continue in 1A, 1B, 2B, 3A, 3D, 5A, 5B, 5C and 5D.

Commissioners said the changes reflected deer population estimates in the impacted management units.
