Pirates Starling Marte reports early with pitchers and catchers today during morning workouts at Pirate City in Bradenton, Fla.
By Gene Collier / Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
Gene Collier: Having won the toss, I was given the option by referee Ed Hochuli of either answering or asking the questions today. I have deferred my choice until the second half of the chat. I'll be happy to address any questions you may have.
Comment From The Card Says Moops: No direct quotes from Kim or Kanye?
Gene Collier: I used to have their numbers but failed to record them into my 2016 Planner.
Comment From Justin: Do you feel Antonio brown will receive any kind of extension this year? And what sort of deal would you expect him to receive?
Gene Collier: I try not to anticipate what Kevin Colbert and Omar Khan will do given all the salary cap implications of everything they do. They always seem to find creative ways of keeping their most important players happy and I'd expect Antonio will be happy here for a long time. As to his value, he should be paid like the top receiver in the league, which he happens to be. Larry Fitzgerald is in the $16.5 million range. Annually.
Comment From The Card Says Moops: Ron Cook wants us to trust the Pirates...I'd love to do that, but I'd rather wait to see what we get out of the 3, 4, 5 rotation spots, first base, etc. You?
Gene Collier: I want you to trust Ron Cook. There aren't a lot of teams with a dynamite 3-4-5 in their rotations.
Comment From The Card Says Moops: Have a take on Peyton Manning's locker room etiquette, pre-NFL days?
Gene Collier: From what I've read pretty extensively this week it was pretty poor, even in a climate of typical outcomes based on too-much testosterone in a confined area like a college football program. Manning has wandered near the line where his legacy is in jeopardy, which just happens to be the subject of my Sunday column. I know you won't miss it Moops.
Comment From The Card Says Moops: Follow up on Peyton -- he can do whatever he wants if a team is willing to pay him, obviously, but why would he keep playing? His arm is shot.
Gene Collier: I think everyone saw the Broncos call a running play on third-and-long in the Super Bowl with the game still in doubt. i know their defense was dominating, but that said a lot about the strength of Manning's arm. I think Archie said he didn't see Manning playing again in Denver, and I really doubt he'll play again anywhere, unless you count one of those goofy studio sets on NFL Network.
Comment From Justin: i know you don't like to speculate. But if you had to guess who this offseason gets resigned, restructured, released this offseason for the steelers.
Gene Collier: I think you've seen the last of Ramon Foster in a Steelers uniform, likewise Cortez Allen, probably Sean Suisham, possibly Kelvin Beachum, maybe Fitz Toussaint. Of course, I don't like to speculate.
Comment From The Card Says Moops: Who do you like to sit next to in the press box at Bucco games? Have a preferred meal/beverage?
Gene Collier: My only seating requirement is that I prefer the first row, if only because the press box at PNC Park is six miles above the earth. Why sit farther back than that? I usually grab a hot dog on the upper level for $3.50 a half hour before the first pitch. Because I know how to live.
Comment From PleaseDraftACornerback: Is there any where to see the accrued seasons for players. Chris Boswell and Alejandro Villanueuva have been in the NFL for more than 1 season, but I think they've only been on practice squads prior to last season, so that means they've only accrued 1 season, and the steelers can keep them for 2 more seasons as exclusive rights free agents. Is that accurate?
Gene Collier: I'm not trying to imitate anyone, but my comedy model is George Carlin, so if I'm guilty of trying to emulate someone, it is he. Of course, I'm doing it without the talent, intellect, anger, angst, talent, rage, talent, courage, talent, talent, and talent.
Comment From Guest: I've never seen your standup routine, but which comedians do you compare yourself to or try to emulate?
Gene Collier: The answer to Guest's question, obviously, precedes Guest's question. Sorry. The answer to PleaseDraftACornerback is that I have no idea but you should definitely ask Pro Football Hall of Famer Ed Bouchette, whose chat begins at www.post-gazette.com one short hour from now.
