Johan Perez scored a majority decision over Paul “The Pittsburgh Kid” Spadafora in a boxing match Saturday night at The Harv, part of Mountaineer Casino, Racetrack and Resort, in New Cumberland, W.Va.

With the win, Perez (18-1-1, 12 knockouts) earns the interim WBA light welterweight world championship. The judges scored the fight for Perez, 115-113, 117-111 and 114-114.

Spadafora fell to 48-1-1, failing to match Rocky Marciano’s all-time record of 49 wins without a loss.

Both fighters were tentative early. Perez wanted to find out if he could land his knockout power punches, while Spadafora needed to see how difficult it would be to hit the taller Perez.

Early on, Spadafora’s defense and jab kept Perez from getting into a rhythm. But midway through the fight Perez started to hit Spadafora with more regularity. Perez’s punches were faster and harder.
