A trio of men with Pittsburgh ties finished the Ironman World Championship triathlon late Saturday night in Kona, Hawaii.
Belle Vernon native Eric McElvenny, a retired Marine who lost his right leg in 2011 serving in Afghanistan, completed the competition in 11 hours, 54 minutes, 19 seconds; former Steelers star Hines Ward finished in 13:08:15; and Joseph Maroon, a neurosurgeon from Sewickley, finished in 16:03:48.
Frederik Van Lierde of Belgium won the race, which consisted of a 2.4-mile open-water swim, a 112-mile bike ride and a full 26.2-mile marathon, with a time of 8:12:29
