At Oakland Catholic, Leah Smith was considered one of the best swimmers in WPIAL history. It didn't take her long to make an impact on college swimming.
Smith, a freshman at the University of Virginia, is ranked among the top NCAA Division I swimmers in two events and has set two Virginia school records. Smith is ranked No. 4 in the 500 freestyle (4 minutes, 36.19 seconds) and the 1,000 freestyle (9:39.36). Both times are school records.
She also has the school's second-best time in the 1,650 (15:57.44) and third best in the 200 (1:45.09). The Virginia women are ranked No. 9 in the country.
* Tyler Wilps, a graduate of Chartiers Valley and a junior wrestler at Pitt, is ranked No. 8 in NCAA Division I at 174 pounds. His younger brother, Noah, is the PG's No. 1-ranked wrestler in the WPIAL Class AAA 170-pound division. Also at Pitt, Bethel Park graduate Nick Bonaccorsi, is ranked No. 13 at 197.
* Matt Stewart, a 6-foot-5 freshman forward from Norwin, has started 11 games for the Wheeling Jesuit basketball team (NCAA Division II). Stewart is averaging 8.7 points and 5.3 rebounds a game. He had 19 points recently against Fairmont State.
