Entering its game against Shenango Saturday, the situation was clear for Western Beaver -- win, and you're in the WPIAL playoffs.
Fortunately for the Golden Beavers, they were able to do just that.
Led by 109 rushing yards and two touchdowns from junior Hunter Roknich, one passing and one rushing, Western Beaver scored 21 unanswered points to defeat the visiting Wildcats, 28-14, in a Class A Big Seven Conference game.
With the victory, the Golden Beavers (4-4, 4-3) qualified for the WPIAL playoffs for the third time in the past four seasons. There is the possibility they could finish with identical 4-4 conference records with Union and Our Lady of the Sacred Heart, but they defeated both those teams this season.
Senior Billy Drear rushed for two touchdowns, the second of which extended Western Beaver's lead to 21-7 in the third quarter.
Senior Tyler Welsh and sophomore Evan Kendall each had a rushing touchdown for Shenango (2-6, 1-6).
• Apollo-Ridge 41, Riverview 16: Quarterback Jesse Zelonka rushed for 236 yards and a touchdown and added 117 passing yards and a touchdown to lead the way as the visiting Vikings (6-2, 5-2) defeated the Raiders (1-7, 1-6) in a Class A Eastern Conference game. Ben Gemballa added two rushing touchdowns for Apollo-Ridge.hsfootball
