WPIAL Class AAA Roundup: West Mifflin pushes past Belle Vernon

West Mifflin, the No. 4 ranked team in Class AAA, broke a 6-6 halftime tie with 35 unanswered points in the second half to defeat visiting Belle Vernon, 41-6, in the Big Nine Conference.

James Wheeler rushed for 179 yards on 27 carries and scored on runs of 1, 59, and 16 yards for the Titans (2-0, 2-0). Wheeler has 539 yards in two games.

Kevin Garbark scored twice for the Titans, on a 38-yard run, and a 58-yard pass from Karlyn Garner.

Belle Vernon (1-1, 1-1) scored its only points on a 20-yard pass from Travis Snyder to Derek Verkleeren.

Franklin Regional 31, Indiana 0

The No. 5-ranked Panthers (2-0, 2-0) scored 24 points in the first half en route to a Greater Allegheny Conference shutout of the Little Indians (1-1, 1-1). Charan Singh, Paul Emanuele, Brett Zanotto and Dom Gianginelli scored on touchdown runs for the Panthers. Franklin Regional also scored on a 22-yard field goal by Jake Roberge.

Mars 64, Derry 7

Josh Schultheis rushed for 219 yards and four touchdowns on 17 carries, as the Planets (1-1, 1-1) pounded the Trojans (0-2, 0-1) in a Greater Allegheny Conference road game. Schultheis scored on runs of 20, 7, 21, and 70 yards. Owen Nearhoof completed 4 of 6 passes for 139 yards and two touchdowns for the Planets. Nearhoof connected with Travis Ganter on a 74-yard scoring pass and with Nolan Skirtich on a 19-yarder. Derry has been outscored 116-7 in two games.

Hollidaysburg 36, Greensburg Salem 6

Josh Bickley connected with Ryan Waltz on touchdown passes of 17 and 62 yards to lead the Golden Tigers (1-1, 1-1) to a convincing road victory over the Golden Lions (1-1, 1-1) in the Greater Allegheny Conference. Reid Miller added 130 rushing yards and a 10-yard touchdown run. Greensburg Salem's only score came on an 11-yard run by Simeon Stevens. Don McKinley rushed for 135 yards for the Golden Lions.

New Castle 47, Riverside 12

Jake McPhatter scored three touchdowns to lead the Hurricanes (1-1) to a convincing non-conference victory against the visiting Panthers (0-2). McPhatter caught a 65-yard touchdown pass from Julian Cox and scored on runs of 8 and 32 yards. Cox rushed for 133 yards on 6 carries and scored on a 76-yard run. Riverside's Jason Dambach completed 8 of 15 passes for 154 yards and two touchdowns.

Chartiers Valley 34, Hopewell 14

Josh Lapiana completed 11 of 20 passes for 320 yards and three touchdowns, as the visiting Colts (1-1, 1-1) defeated the Vikings (0-2, 0-2) in the Parkway Conference. Dom Costello caught 6 passes for 169 yards and scored on passes of 20 and 73 yards. Costello also scored on a 65-yard interception return. Tyler Ishman led Hopewell with 114 yards and two touchdowns rushing.

West Allegheny 42, Ambridge 7

Tory Delmonico scored three touchdowns to lead the No. 2 ranked Indians (2-0, 2-0) to a convincing road victory against the Bridgers (0-2, 0-1) in the Parkway Conference. Delmonico caught a 31-yard touchdown pass from Andrew Koester and scored on runs of 1 and 5 yards. Koester also connected with Robert Threet on a 32-yard touchdown pass.

Knoch 19, Trinity 7

Cody Milsom rushed for 165 yards on 36 carries and scored on runs of 5 and 3 yards, as the Knights (1-1) posted a non-conference road victory against the Hillers (0-2). Knoch also scored on a 6-yard pass from Daniel Farinelli to Jim Larrimer. Trinity actually opened the scoring on a 65-yard run by Colton Jordan in the first quarter, but was held scoreless the rest of the game.

Uniontown 26, Albert Gallatin 25

Doug Lewis and Zavier Ellis each rushed for two touchdowns to lead the Red Raiders (1-1, 1-1) to a narrow Big Nine Conference victory against the visiting Colonials (1-1, 0-1). Lewis scored on runs of 14 and 65 yards, while Ellis scored on runs of 16 and 45 yards. The Colonials were led by Hunter Moody, who threw for two touchdowns and ran for another.

Ringgold 57, Laurel Highlands 14

Nico Law threw for three touchdowns and ran for another to lead the Rams (1-1, 1-1) to a convincing Big Nine Conference victory against the visiting Mustangs (0-2, 0-2). Law connected with Alan Pritchett on touchdown passes of 24 and 40 yards, and with Luke Baldesberger on a scoring pass of 9 yards. Law also ran 7 yards for a score. Chacar Berry scored twice for the Rams, on a 38-yard run and a 54-yard interception return.

Moon 14, Blackhawk 6

The Tigers (2-0, 2-0) remained unbeaten with a Parkway Conference victory against the Cougars (0-2, 0-2).

Highlands 26, Hampton 7

The Golden Rams (2-0, 2-0) posted a Greater Allegheny Conference win against the visiting Talbots (0-2, 0-2).
