Vincentian Academy turned up the defense and took care of Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic to win its fifth consecutive WPIAL Class A girls basketball title, 68-54, Saturday at the Petersen Events Center.
Kiersten Elliott scored 24 points and Lexi Griggs chipped in 15 to lead the Royals’ attack.
North Catholic, which committed 24 turnovers, stayed in the game throughout and took the lead, 48-47, on an Abby Goetz free throw with 6:16 remaining in the fourth quarter. But Elliott hit a 3-pointer on the next Vincentian possession that keyed a 9-0 run over the next 3:16 that put the Royals ahead to stay.
Junior Sam Breen led North Catholic with 22 points and eight rebounds before she fouled out with 3:12 left in the fourth quarter.
