Girls basketball roundup: Ringgold advances past South Fayette

Marlena Schmidt scored 13 points and blocked eight shots to lead Ringgold to a 49-42 victory against South Fayette in a WPIAL Class AAA girls basketball preliminary round game played at Chartiers Valley.

The victory gives Ringgold (12-9) the No. 13 seed. The Rams meet No. 4 seed Hopewell Wednesday at a time and site to be determined.

Bailey Cooper added 11 points for the Rams, while Eleni Radic chipped in 10.

Autumn Mozick led South Fayette (12-11) in scoring with 14 points, including three 3-point goals.

Class AAA preliminary round

■ West Mifflin 76, Freeport 48: Taylor Thomas scored 23 points and had 12 rebounds to lead the Titans (16-5) past the Yellowjackets (10-12) at Plum. Ciara Patterson and Paige Flore each added 13 points. Patterson also dished out 11 assists. West Mifflin meets No. 5 seed Indiana Wednesday at a time and site to be determined. Zoe Soilis led Freeport with 15 points.

■ Kittanning 54, Greensburg Salem 38: Tiffany Montgomery, Emily Klingensmith and Emily Knepshield each scored 11 points to lead the Wildcats (15-7) past the Golden Lions (9-14) at Plum. Greensburg Salem's Karly Mellinger led all scorers with 20 points, including all 14 in the fourth quarter. Kittanning meets top-seeded Blackhawk Wednesday.

■ Moon 61, Uniontown 24: Amirah Moore scored 20 points as the Tigers (15-7) vanquished the Red Raiders (8-11) at Peters Township. The Tigers meet No. 2 seed Elizabeth Forward Wednesday at a time and site to be determined. Arielle Winfrey led Uniontown with 11 points.

■ Thomas Jefferson 50, Ambridge 36: Haley Kutscher scored 13 points while Alexis Yanief and Courtney Zoglmann added 12 apiece as the Jaguars (13-9) outscored the Bridgers (13-10). Thomas Jefferson meets No. 3 seed South Park Wednesday at a time and site to be determined. Sydney Rabold paced Ambridge with 13 points.

Class A preliminary round

■ Carmichaels 41, Monessen 37: Caroline Cree scored all four of her team's overtime points and 15 overall to lead the Mighty Mikes (8-14) past the Greyhounds (4-17) at Baldwin. Carmichaels meets top-seeded Vincentian Wednesday. This was Carmichaels first playoff win since 2003. Mariha Johnson led Monessen with 17 points.

Class A first round

■ Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic 51, Winchester Thurston 27: Paige Kizir scored 10 points while Abby Goetz and Sam Breen added nine apiece to lead the No. 3 seed Trojanettes (16-7) past the No. 14 Bears (9-13) at North Hills. Leading 35-25 after three quarters, North Catholic put the game out of reach by outscoring Winchester Thurston 16-2 in the fourth quarter. Caroline Benec paced the Bears with 10 points.

■ St. Joseph 61, Jefferson-Morgan 14: Mallory Heinle scored 23 points and Julie Hetu added 11 to lead the No. 4 Spartans (19-4) past the No. 13 Rockets (12-11) at Elizabeth Forward. Kayla Yorko led the Rockets with six points.

■ Quigley 58, West Greene 17: Kaitlyn Smith scored 10 of her game-high 21 points in the second quarter as the No. 5 Spartans (17-5) shut out the No. 12 Pioneers (11-11) in the second quarter at Peters Township. Kristen Jackson added 17 points for the Spartans, who meet St. Joseph Saturday in the quarterfinals. Alyssa Raber led the Pioneers with seven points.

■ California 38, Cornell 25: Jenna Miller scored nine points, while Kylie Huffman added eight points and blocked seven shots to lead the No. 6 Trojans (18-3) past the No. 11 Raiders (12-11) at Elizabeth Forward. California converted 10 of 14 free throws in the fourth, and meets No. 3 North Catholic Saturday. Becca Robinson and Dominique Richards scored eight apiece for the Raiders.
